Wanting a career change (Advice needed)

Published

Good morning everyone,

I've been contemplating changing my career for quite sometime. I initially went to school for business (I didn't finish) but then decided to go to cosmetology school. I'm a licensed cosmetologist but not practicing. I have since went back to work as an Administrative Assistant. Yes I know I did some hoping around :( I've since then have been more adamant about going back to school for nursing. The idea of becoming a nurse is what I feel I was meant to do.

I love the idea of taking care of people, making them feel better. Hence the reason why I went to cosmetology school. I really deep down in my heart feel like this is the right thing to do.

The problem I'm faced with is incurring more student loan debt. Is it really worth it? I mean, If money wasn't a problem...I would already be going. I make $35,000 a year currently so I don't even know if I would qualify for any federal grants to help pay for school.

Any advice would be most appreciated. I really want to go to school for nursing so bad

Sincerely,

Before you invest any more money, I suggest you make darn sure this is the path for you ;) Try to find work as a nursing assistant or aide in a hospital or nursing home. Maybe even make a small investment in a CNA course. You will work alongside nurses and see a little of what the career is like, and hopefully this will help you make an informed decision. Nursing is no longer a "sure thing" as far as jobs for new nurses go. You want to make absolutely sure you will be happy with this before you invest a lot of time and money.

Thank you for the advice Purple Scrubs. I really do feel like this is what I should be doing. I watch any type of medical program that exists. My favorite is "Trauma - Life in the ER" I can sit and watch this program forever. The idea of me being able to help save lives, to care for those who are sick and ailing makes me want to do it even more.

The idea of helping to save someones life, I mean how cool is that. Nurses definitely don't get the credit they deserve. I have never been more certain in my life about a career than this.

Regarding the CNA route, that is my intent. I just want to be able to get a job in a hospital environment. Not sure about working in a nursing home though. I plan on saving up the money to get my CNA license and go from there
