I am looking to attend an online PMHNP program. Walden University is one that I am looking at. Anyone with experience there or other recommendations?

Please do not give your money to this joke of a "school".

I have many colleagues that went there and they still can't find a job and not only that but they did not learn anything. Go to a local university that has hospital affiliations if possible.

Look into cheaper online schools. People tend to go here cause there co worker is a student at Walden and because the admission process is extremely easy.

Did you make a decision? I am considering Walden as well. I hope someone will elaborate with specific reasons why in their opinion this is or is not a good school.  Hopefully, responding with valid reason's and not just complaints.  It is really hard trying to figure this path out, as well as expensive.  I am considering the MHA or Nurse Executive programs.

I have decided to go to University of Mary in Bismarck ND. All the reviews and opinions I have read promote going to a college where they have a brick and mortar building. Having an actual physical building holds clout with employers. If you attend a strictly on-line college your employment application goes to the bottom of the pile. My classes are online but we also attend in room classes "so many" times a year. Their DNP pass rate for boards is 100%. The Walden staff contacted me and are very easy to talk to. University of Mary is as well. I did talk to someone from Maryville and they acted like I was just a number to them, so I crossed them off my list.

You may receive more feedback from students attending Walden by joining some of the Walden student Facebook groups. Also, make sure that Walden is approved in your state. Good luck!

You could pick almost any other program and come out better prepared.  This program is ripping people off and tarnishing the reputation of NPs.

I personally work with several walden graduates and coworkers who currently attend.  The practicing NP's I've worked with do seem well prepared, however I saw a bill of a coworker of mine who had left it laying at the nurses station and it was $70,000.  I go to a state school which is mostly online and much cheaper (like $25K), and my GI bill picks up 100% of it.  I'm not saying Walden is a bad choice but it does seem to be pretty pricey.

There's a reason. I have precepted one, work with another, and one of my coworkers is precepting one right now. They have been, hands down, the most unknowledgeable NPs I have met. My group precepts PA students and they even more clearly demonstrate the lack of education in these Walden students. It's embarrassing for the profession and is setting us back. Hospitals in Minnesota, where Walden is "located", explicitly state on their job postings they won't hire NPs from fully online, for-profit schools. This sentiment is spreading.

On the contrary, I actually think nursing, for whatever reason, is extremely lenient and forgiving of these crappy schools.

In my previous career, grads from these schools would never get the good-paying jobs. Unlike in nursing, there was simply no debate about these programs because it's fully understood that folks who went to these programs (100% acceptance rates) lack the intellectual capability to handle even the basic analytical work required on the job and they wouldn't get the rigorous training one would from a reputable program. Resumes with these schools wouldn't even make it to the bottom of the pile, they ended up in the trash.
