UVA CNL May 2011 applicants

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Hi,

Is there anyone else out there who applied/ is currently applying to the UVa direct entry MSN CNL program? I would love to find other members so that we can go through this process together. I'm excited to hear from other applicants! Good luck!

I was wondering the same thing about the interviews. I am also leaning towards psych nursing, psychogeriatrics in particular. I can't wait to get started!:specs:

Yeah, That's what I thought too! I'm interested in psych as well! I'm between that and acute care. :)

Hi,

Since a couple of you are from out of state you may not have had a chance to go to an open house. I was looking back over my notes from the one I went to and saw that they interview about 50% of the applicants. I think I've seen somewhere that they had over 100 applicants for the 2010 entering class, and about 125 for the 2009 entering class.

I don't know where they are currently doing psych rotations. Western State is in Staunton, about 30 miles west of Charlottesville. They used to do some at the VA in Salem, which would be about 90 miles southwest. Both Staunton and Salem are easily accessible by interstate (64 and 81).

Hope this info is helpful. Good luck to all!

Thanks for the information! I would only assume that they interview due to their interests in the applicant, or at least I would hope :yeah: I really wish I could attend one of the open-houses. Did you apply for the program too for next summer?

January 15 needs to come a little faster! :uhoh3:

Ninzy,

I am also a 2011 hopeful! I teach part time at 2 colleges, and with the end of the semester rapidly approaching I will be plenty busy over the next month which should help pass some wait time until decisions are posted.:)

"Waves to rn'ti4uva"

I thought I would find you again on this forum! Hopefully we'll see each other again soon. I'm glad you took such detailed notes... I definitely thought the information session was extremely useful but wish I would have remembered more information now!

Hi Guys!

I have applied to the UVA CNL as well, and am super excited about the prospect of going there. I interviewed last month....but like everyone else not sure if that meant I was a "good" candidate or not

I agree that the program seemed very organized. The students had many good things to say about the clinicals, especially. Some of the second-year folks said there were some glitches in the classes...kind of a hit-or-miss deal with how it worked out...but we all agreed that the longer the program continues the smoother things will get for both the faculty and the students. Hopefully 2011 is the year that there are no problems, haha!

What do you all do for work right now? I'm curious to see the variety in backgrounds that this program will draw.....I am a cop right now and before that I was in the Army, so nursing seemed like a natural progression :D

Hi Mr. Dave,

Your background sounds fascinating! I think you definitely must have a wide variety of experiences that would really complement a career in nursing! I am a lab coordinator for a Neuroscience lab and our research implements neuroimaging techniques with social psychology topics, which means a lot of EEG and fMRI work. I would love to hear from others too!

Is anyone currently taking pre-requisites now? I was wondering how that works since grades will not come in until late December. I am currently taking A&P 2 and wasn't how I would report my grade to the program.

Hi Meg, thanks for the reply! I am about to enroll in A&P II in a couple weeks and am not sure about reporting the grades, either. I think my plan is to wait until all prereq's are complete, then send a transcript to my programs of choice. I have only completed A&P I at this point, however, so if you have most of them done it may be more beneficial for you to send them now (?).

Your career background seems like it will give you a GREAT advantage in the realm of nursing. Some of my classmates in A&P 1 had medical backgrounds and held a noticeable advantage of the rest of us in terms of their base of medical knowledge and general procedure. I'm a little intimidated, truth be told, but am hoping that some of my "life" experience will help portray me in a good light... I've had the privilege of seeing some pretty amazing things performed by medics overseas in Iraq and some of the ER staff in the hospitals where I follow car crash victims once they've been removed from the crash sight....so if nothing else I can at least appreciate what good medical help can do to save lives :o

Did you take the GRE for UVA or did you meet the GPA requirement? I was above the GPA cut-off but needed to take the GRE for some other schools. I thought I totally bombed and almost cancelled my scores at the end of the test, but am glad I didn't, haha.

Meg11,

Thanks for starting this thread! You'll probably get a lot more responses once decisions are posted. I have a friend in the NP program who actually had to have a final transcript faxed right before classes started, so it shouldn't be a problem to get your grades sent in. Did you finish A&P II yet?

All of the classes I was teaching at both colleges this semester finished up last week and now they just have finals, so I will be enjoying a bit of down time before next semester.

MrDave - are you applying for the 2011 Cohort too? I was actually working with a Sheriff's Deputy at UVA this past week. I also saw that you are a veteran. I'm going to have at least one returning vet in one of my classes this spring and one of my students from last year is currently deployed. I agree it will be very interesting to go to school with people from a variety of fields.

Ninzy and Hope - I'm sure you are also looking forward to getting our decisions soon. If you have any "where in Virginia" questions post away - if I don't know, I'm sure someone else will.

Good luck!

rn'ti4uva -

Thanks for the reply! Finally over with the semester and it was a crucial semester since I took a majority of my pre-reqs! I'm happy with my grades, it gave me a GPA boost to 3.5! Just wish I could've got those grades in before they started reviewing! :-D

I'm actually taking a roadtrip soon this month to Washington D.C./Maryland. I'm thinking about stopping UVA and visiting there. Would you happen to know if the school will be open? Or are they already "closed" for winter break? I was thinking of taking a tour of UVA. Would you happen to know if the nursing school would give me a tour or if it would be a good idea to visit and introduce myself there too?

MrDave- I give you a lot of credit to do such a big career change! I'm a neuroscience major and have been working with a few professors and research projects in the U.S. My current job is in healthcare though.

Thanks!:-)

I'm so nervous!!!!!!! Almost a month until we hear back...:redbeathe Best of luck all!

Hi Ninzy,

Well I know that the hospital will definitely be open and I think it's worthwhile to check it out. I would call the nursing school administration and ask if the building would be open. Just so you know there are two main buildings the nursing students use: Mcleod Hall where the clinical simulation labs take place and the Claude Moore Nursing Education Building where classes are held. The latter is a brand new building and it is definitely a must see! In terms of the rest of UVa, I know the buildings are closed on Dec 24th, 25th, 26th, 30th, 31st.

I hope you can make it out to Cville! And I also hate the waiting part, I want to know!!
