Are you applying to the May 2011 RN program at MCI VA BEACH????

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

Anyone out there applying to the RN program at the Virginia Beach MCI campus? My older sister just graduated from MCI and has already landed her first job! The wait to see if I am accepted or not is absolutely killing me. Anyone else???

Crystal, thanks for the info. I've never had a five hour 2 day a week for five week class. I've taken these classes before, but this is interesting.

I'd like to send luck vibes to all those out there applying for May!

Very welcome!

I am actually in the computer class right now, I just finished the test and we are on a break. You are free to use the computer for leisure (e-mail, etc) during break times.

One note though: the chemistry course is actually 3 days per week, not just 2 :(

As far as the pre-req's they are not bad. I did not take the math course, but I am currently in the computer and chemistry courses. The computer class is easy, as long as you are in class and pay attention. The teacher here is great and she tries to make it less-boring than it sounds :)

As far as chemistry, it is easy for some and not for others. In our class today the class average for our quiz was BELOW failing. I am personally not struggling in chemistry, and i honestly only believe this is because i attend every class, pay attention, takes notes, and study. It really isn't bad- the actual nursing program will be much more intense.

Don't stress- i'm sure you will do great!

Another thing I should mention about Chemistry is that it's a harder grading scale. 93% is an A- and so on...not your standard 90/80/70/60. So basically if you don't show up and study you have a pretty good chance of failing some things or at least come close to it. I think like 5 people failed our first test. I don't know about the 2nd one. I'll find out Wednesday.

Also, the people who I talked to that had their interviews yesterday were told that they are going to select people on Friday. So hopefully we will know by early next week.

All the classes you will take in the RN program are on this grading scale, except for some of the Gen-Eds. For all the nursing classes you must have an 80% to pass and that is a C. Here is the grading scale straight off my Moodle for BIO 105 which is Micro:

Letter grades are determined as follows:

A 93-100% of the total percentage points possible

B 85-92.9% of the total percentage points possible

C 80-84.9% of the total percentage points possible

F Below 80

I am not sure what the grading scale is for the Gen-Eds because I do not have to take any of them, but my classmates have told me you must have a 75% to pass those.

what i've found is a lot of things written on allnurses about mci are not totally true, but after attending the orientation saturday i think they withhold some information- during our little presentation they said you could go from the rn program to the bsn program- what they didn't say was to apply to bsn program you have graduate with an rn degree from a nationally accredited program and mci rn is not. it is possible to still apply to the bsn program, but you have to take the nln exam first. i found it odd they left this piece of information out of the presentation.

update:

i believe this info is incorrect and i went to our don here at nn campus and she says she also believes your info about taking an nln exam is incorrect. she sent an email to the don at the va beach campus, which is our sister school, and i will check back with her later for the info.

My info could most definitely be incorrect, I have a slightly confusing email sitting in my inbox from my counselor about it. I was prompted to ask her after reading the requirements for the BSN program- it says something about nationally accredited (is the southern whatever national?). I get so confused on the accreditation.

I think this could be why MCI gets a bad wrap. Confusing information. I was going to apply to the program about a year and a half ago but I had an adviser that told me I could only work in 11 states- my current adviser say this is incorrect. :p odd, huh?

Hey my DON just heard back from Dr Tillerson, head of the BSN. The information about an NLN exam is incorrect. You do NOT take an exam to go from our ADN program and then do the BSN.

Advisers are sadly not the best sources of information because they all deal with all programs. The DON is the only realible source, in my opinion. Write all your questions down and ask them during your interview.

As an RN student I can tell you I have never been told I can work in only 11 states, so I do believe that would be false. If it is specific regarding the need for the NLN accreditation we are currently in the candidacy phase for that. My DON said that it is hard just to be a candidate for that and that they are doing everything to ensure we get the accredidation. This is what makes credit transfer to other schools a nightmare, but once we get the NLN we will be good to go.

As far as your questions regarding National Accreditation I can tell you as an HRM degree holder that regional is what matters in most cases. I am not really sure what you are asking though so I do not know how to clarify.

Hope this helps. MCI gets a bad rap for confusing people often and that is unfortunate. You should ask for a copy of the RN handbook because that spells everything out.

eek.. I need to proof read!

Thanks for clearing that up. What I meant was the RN program is only accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools instead of NLNAC (as you said, they are a candidate). In the 2010 catalog it says RN's from a nationally accredited program can only apply to the BSN program, if the school is not nationally accredited the NLN exam has to be taken. If the director of nursing says the information is false- I'm sure it is. I'm in the beginning stages so it's difficult to know who to get in contact with other than my adviser and financial aid. We could have had a miscommunication.

In the end, it doesn't really matter because I know this is a great program and it seems like after the final interview you know what to expect more. I've talked to a few graduates and none of them have had problems finding work and all feel really well prepared. I got bad information about the 11 state thing. The only thing I know for sure is it's a really difficult program :)

I am happy it is all cleared up for you. The program is extremely hard, but anyone can do it if they apply themselves. I believe you had said you have a prior degree, I do too and it helped in the sense that I know how to apply myself but it does not help at all to prepare you for nursing exams. That is a new breed of beast and you just have to figure it out when you start.

All the graduates I know are happy too and all the students I talk to who are almost done are happy with the decision they made. Let me know if you have any more questions and I will try to get you answers. My DON is awesome and has an open door policy so I can always stop by to ask her for clarification if the need arises.

Thank you so much! Your screen name makes me smirk, I feel like I'm a career student as well. And yes, I have an associates and a B.S. I'm excited to meet this new breed of beast :D I'm realizing if I am accepted into the program my education is never going to end. :)

Anyone out there appling for May,

Let us know what happens!

My fingers are crossed.

I believe we should know this week :)
