Hello, so I am getting worried. I am a new RN grad and I have been applying for jobs all over the Lower Mainland. I know that a few of my classmates have already secured jobs, and many of them were ESN's for the past year+. I was not an ESN unfortunately.
Vancouver Coastal Health:
I wanted to know if anyone has been applying at Vancouver Coastal Health? I have applied to several positions at a few of the hospitals via their website and in person.
If you log into their careers website and you look at all of the positions applied to, under the "submittal status" are there options other than "received submission"? One of them says "candidate withdrawn", but it still allows me to press the "withdraw" button
Any of you that got jobs, did anything change on past job submittals?
Fraser Health:
I applied online, got an email with a package to fill out, filled out package, submitted reference, then received package about hours, skills for different types of nursing. Filled those out and sent back, received confirmation that all documents have been received, but have not heard back from them since. It has been about two weeks now.
How long does this usually take? Will they call me or email me?
Providence health:
Website is straightforward, have not noticed any application status etc. I have applied for a few jobs, again have not heard back from any of them.
Any other areas I could explore? Unfortunately I am not willing to move out of the Lower Mainland.
Any free or cheap courses I could take to improve my resume? (online certificates etc)
I noticed that some places mention ACLS (advanced cardiovascular/cardiac life support), it is expensive, around $450. Do most employers provide this for employees or is BLS sufficient?

For Fraser Health, this year my manager hired about four new hires and all were ESNs or did their preceptorships there. I've heard that when other people apply for the new grad program online things move very slowly or you don't hear back at all.
I also got my job through ESN. Sorry it's hard in greater Vancouver. Ask your classmates who have jobs if their units are hiring. Where did you preceptor? Consider applying their. Take anything for a first job, you can always find something else later. Online applications got me nowhere, consider going to the unit in person if able. Good luck!
Thank you for your response.
I applied on the unit (in person) where I preceptored and they had two full-time positions posted online. I applied to both, but they must have gotten filled before I applied because right after I applied online they were gone. I applied in person with the unit manager and it seemed like things went well, I am thinking about following up with a phone call next week.
I am applying for everything. At first I wanted to stay within my area but now I am willing to travel or move to get a job.

I stumbled to your post because I really want to find out the job market condition for a new BSN in lower mainland. How long ago did you graduate?
I graduated at the end of September. How about you? What province are you in?

how about provincial health services authority (PHSA)? look into their positions...BC Childrens, BC Cancer, etc....
I did look at jobs there. I am a new grad an unfortunately I do not have the experience that they want/need. Most of those positions are for peds nurses, peri-natal, post-partum etc. Thanks for the tip though :)

I am a nurse on the island so same collective agreement. I'd say put your resume in casually anywhere you can get into even if it's geriatrics and once you build your hours up you can apply for a position since you will have some senority by then

I know this is not ideal, but enrolling in a specialty course through BCIT, so you can add this to your resume, or when applying you can say you are taking it? I have found that this is almost the expectation when graduating from NS now, that you have some sort of specialty course. Of course applying to any med-surg postings, or maybe some of your classmates that have found jobs could give you managers emails, or phone numbers so you can contact them? good luck

Hello, I am student nurse in Edmonton planning to move to lower mainland when I graduate this year.I am just wondering, did you manage to get work in that area and how is it looking like for new graduate nurses upcoming? I am still deciding whether its worth it to actually move.I was thinking of Abbotsford or Chilliwack.

Hi BCnewgrad! I have the same situation as you. I'm an IEN, and didn't do ESN or even clinical preceptorship after my assessment. I got my registration in September, and started applying then but until now, I still haven't heard anything yet. Some of the status under VCH I applied to were changed to 'Under Review', but the dates were still in 2014. Have you secured a job already at this time?
Any luck finding a job yet? I hope so!
