Vacation?

Published

Does anyone else have issues with vacation time being approved when others are expected to be on maternity leave? I put a request in 5 months ago and since then 2 employees have started and will be taking maternity leave June/July/August and I requested a week in June off. Does anyone else struggle with this? What have you done to get the time off or have you just not taken it? Thanks

Unfortunately my request has been denied I was informed today due to the other employees being on maternity leave. I have the vacation planned and paid for so I'm not really sure what to do next.

That is so unfair. You have seniority and your request was approved before their maternity leave. I would be raising Cain.

Unless there truly are no other nursing jobs available close to you that you would consider I would explain your position to the powers that be that grant or deny vacation requests and if they still deny yours, say good bye to that place.

I worked somewhere that did that....no official reply, just find out when the schedule posts whether or not you got the time you wanted. If they "lost" the request, you had to cover those shifts. If they didn't approve it, you found out by the schedule posting and you were scheduled. That happened. Often. I got to where I made copies of my requests.

I don't work there anymore. 'Nuff said.

1. So the pregnant nurses are new employees that started after your request?

2. And because they are due in the summer (June/July/Aug) NO BODY can go on vacation?

Yeah hightail it to HR but let the PTB know that you are doing this, send emails to your boss, their boss etc etc.

Reminds me of when I was an RN, I was pregnant and my dad wanted to take my mom & me out for lunch on mother's day since I was about to be a mom soon. SO I request Sunday Mother's day off.

Standing at nurses station when BossLady hands out the May schedule. Oh,Of Course I am scheduled to work!! So grabbed the request book and in front of all standing at nurses station asked why when no one else from any shift requested Mother's day off, why am I scheduled to work? Here response, "Oh well just switch with someone". My response: "NO, I requested it off, I have plenty of PTO, It is a legitimate request and I expect you to honor it. But since you chose to ignore my request, I am notifying you that I am calling in for Mother's Day, I will not be coming in. You have been notified as per policy (call in must be 4 hours prior to shift) I am calling in today/4 weeks in advance." I am also going to HR right now to file a complaint about this". As I head to the elevators with the brand new schedule & request book, she tells me to stop, she will reconsider. "Do what you want I am still filing the complaint about this". And I did. Got back to the floor, she had changed it so I was off. This is passive/aggressive crap and should not be tolerated. Same boss lady once commented as I submitted vacation request for 6 months from that day, ;a couple weeks after I returned from vacation to Europe. "What's this? You just went on vacation?" "Yup sure did and I'm going again got plenty of PTO". Always made copies, always asked her to sign & date she received it. Also made copied of request book periodically.

I don't know how pregnant you were in this scenario but in my head you're hugely pregnant and waddling to the elevators and shaking the request book over your head as you say "Do what you want, I'm still filing a complaint." I'm dying over here. Don't mind me. I'm tired and giggly tonight. :roflmao:

And I work 2 8s and 2 12s. Not even on the shift that the pregnant nurses are from which is making me extra frustrated.

I was annoyed for your situation before, but reading THIS ups the ridiculous factor into the stratosphere. ***** You don't even work the same schedule as the nurses who will be on leave?

So stupid. Sorry you are dealing with this. I'm angry for you. ((hugs))

Quit?

Tell them, you requested one week off 7months in advance. They have no reason to deny your hard earned PTO.

Especially becuse if they don't give it to you, when are you supposed to take it?

tell them that you will not be able to come in that week. And if they don't give it as PTO than you will be finding a new place to work.

If if you cannot quit becuse there are not better job opportunities than I would tell them that you are calling in.

I don't typically request time off but when I have it doesn't get "accepted" or denied officially with notice. We find out once our schedule comes out. Our maternity leaves are not covered by temp positions they just expect the rest of the staff to fill in the holes. I've been pretty burnt out and really was looking forward to the week off. I will speak with HR and see what the official policy and rules are. It's interesting to hear how other hospitals handle it. And I work 2 8s and 2 12s. Not even on the shift that the pregnant nurses are from which is making me extra frustrated.

I think we work at the same hospital. We have nurses that plan vacations months in advance, only to find their time isn't approved (because they only approve time 4-8 weeks in advance.) My hospital doesn't believe in traveling nurses/temp workers. When someone gets injured/preggers we all suffer. No wonder they can't keep staff. It sucks.

I was 4 months pregnant, so starting to put on weight and not sleeping well. The killer was that out of about 25 nurses (fulltimers/part timers/prns) Not One Person requested it off & she purposely did not schedule me off. A couple of docs overheard the whole thing, one even commented after I said it was a legit request that should be honored, that it was very well worded. (He offered me a job when I became a FNP). At this point in my career I had been a nurse for about 15 years, just got out of the Navy and just tired of managers & hospitals jerking me around. Just decided was not going to take it anymore from her. Must have been the hormones!!!!
