VA Hiring Process

From the previous posts I've read the VA hiring process is pretty long and drawn out. I've applied to two different VA sites. The VA an hour away from my home I can always get in contact with a nurse recruiter and my application status for two posting says "referred to selecting official." The VA closest to my home, I can't get through to the recruiter, she emailed me back once and the status of all the apps just says "application received." I do know a nurse practitioner that works at this VA site and she tried to give my resume to the recruiter, but I had to apply online.

For those of you that are familiar with the hiring process, any idea what the next step is. In all there are around 20 RN vacancies. The two systems have two completely different online application submissions, how will I know if I've completed the application process correctly, its a little confusing :(

I've been applying since I've graduated and earlier this year I found out that I was applying the wrong way so those positions don't count. These positions closed in September.

Thanks in advance ?

Hello All,

So I'm a new grad and figured I'd share my experience with the hiring process. I applied for the OR in April, interviewed in early May and graduated in late May. I received a tentative offer on June 13th, did the physical and started the hiring process with HR immediately after. I passed my nclex on the 21st and then completed the vetpro process. My package went to the nursing board on July 12th. I received a firm offer via phone call on Aug. 2nd and set my orientation for the 22nd. I just got my letter if appointment yesterday.

All in all , the process took me 3-4 months, depending on if you want to count the time before I graduated. My only suggestion is once you have your tentative offer, you're pretty much in. It's all on HR at that point to process your paperwork in a timely manner so stay on top of HR with your paperwork. For this VA anyway, it seems it takes a flurry of emails and phone calls for them to get anything done. I'm not saying outright harass them but I never let more the 3-4 weeks go by without communication. Things seemed to magically get done within days of calling and emailing almost every time for me.

Hey everyone. I have a question. Does having a BSN automatically start you off as a level 2 nurse in Illinois? I have my BSN and over 3 years nursing experience. Also, do they count LPN experience as nursing experience? I heard some people say they don't. Thanks.

It helps, but it's not guaranteed. The boards are notoriously independent and it's hard to predict. It. Would out you at the high end of nurse 1,

LPN experience does not count when being evaluated by the board. BSN does not guarantee Nurse II.

From those of you who have gone through the hiring process, how long from when you did your physical and fingerprinting before the firm offer? I have done Eqip, VetPro and now I have my appointment for the physical and fingerprinting this week. Just looking for a time frame :)

I did my physical/fingerprinting on July 13 and received my final offer September 2, so almost 2 months later.

Wow! I talked to HR after I left from fingerprinting and the physical and she said that they would probably call me this week with an onboarding date. We talked about potential dates for me to start. The PA I saw for the physical said that the physical and fingerprinting just kind of get "thrown in" during all kinds of areas of the process. So we're looking at me starting on October 17!

Does anyone know if VA looks at previous application materials? Thanks!

I am from California, RN with bsn. I went to the VA website and clicked on jobs. There's no jobs available for the VA hospital listed online on where I live. I'm sure there's gotta be job openings. what else can I do? Where can I look?

Go to usajobs.com, then search for Rn jobs in California.

At what point in the process was salary discussed

Once you get your paperwork ready, the stuff goes to a nursing board and they determine your salary.
