USF MSN CNL non nurse spring 2018

Published

Hello everyone. I was searching for a thread but could not find one so I am starting this discussion topic for USF MSN non nurse spring 2018 applications.

Lets all discuss our stats like GPA, volunteer experience, etc. I have a decent prerequisite GPA right now. I have registered for Micro and psychology and will be taking in fall. My undertgrad GPA is 3.15 in computer applications (not that good). After working in customer service I was no longer interested in computers so decided to change my major.

Lets start this journey together and good luck to everyone.

I received my notification through the application status page and applied for the 2018 Spring Main Campus. It said it was updated on October 31 and once you click on the link, it will redirect you. I was shocked because I have been checking this thread and no one else has been notified. Which leads me to believe that I wasn't competitive and I was rejected in the first rounds. I'm hoping that some of you will post your stats because I felt lost for a week however i'm starting to pick up again. I'm gathering alot of motivation for my next steps. Thanks in advance for the people who post stats and their status when it comes out!

Hi! I recently graduated from UCI winter 2017. I was a caregiver for a year, and have 100+ hours of volunteering at Hoag hospital, under a program that allows for a lot of patient interaction and tasks. I did 2 years of research, and was highly involved in my housing community, hired as a community programmer, then as a resident advisor. My letters of recommendation came from a professor that I researched under, and a nurse from the hospital that went to USF. My undergrad GPA is a 3.28, and I honestly don't know my prereq GPA (and I don't want to check because that'll make me nervous, but I got A-'s and B+'s). I think that those are the main points in my application, but I made sure to list out EVERYTHING that I did in college: my resume was 2 pages long! I feel like everyone has similar stats, or even more competitive based on past threads. I think at this point, my saving grace has been my personal statement-- I got a bunch of people to look at it and edit it. USF is the only school that I applied to this cycle. If I don't get in, I'm going to be taking a CNA course and reapplying, and also applying to other schools. I hope this helps.

Did they redirect you to a letter?

I really appreciate your time for writing back to us. There is no doubt that you are way more competitive than me. I have volunteered in community service setting but no healthcare volunteer experience. I also have one of my prerequisite in progress. 4.0 in rest of the prerequisites. I believe that I am not competitive enough that is why I am not that hopeful.

I have already started preparing myself to apply for the next app cycle. I am also planning to start some volunteer work once my fall classes are over.

Do not think that you are not competitive enough. It is just that USF has some distinct way of selecting applicants which no one can understand because in the last year's forum Afton was waitlisted and she had EXCELLENT stats.

As you mentioned previously, I too think that CNA license will enhance your chances of getting in. Goodluck!!

Yeah, I was redirected to a letter. I forgot to mention I have emailed 3 people at USF and only 2 have come back giving me general details such as improving GPA, reconsider LOR, and more patient interactions.

@phambo - thank you for sharing that you received your status before ours. That is strange not only did they confirm with you much earlier but also had done so on the application page. Have you applied to other programs?

Good luck to everyone; I am constantly checking my email and hopping onto this forum throughout the day.

I haven't applied to any other programs, in fact I am a recent graduate at UCD and I am currently working 2 jobs, a caregiver and at a company 50+ hours a week to gather resources for grad school. I worked tirelessly through my personal statement and was able to turn it in before the deadline. I am now looking at other places and hopefully take my GRE after retaking some prereq courses.

Ahh :( I thought your stats are already competitive as is. But if you think of it there is only about a 6-9% chance if they really do get 400-600 applications per cycle.

I am not very hopeful of getting in as I don't have health care experience. I graduated from UCLA in 2016 with a 3.12 GPA as a psych major and art history minor. With such a low undergrad GPA, I made sure I got all A+'s on the science pre-requisites. For USF's pre reqs as a whole, I only got 2 B's from classes (english comp/writing class) I took during my undergrad. Straight out of undergrad, I worked as a Behavior Technician;I worked with individuals with autism. I'm currently volunteering as a TA/ Tutor for the microbiology class I took in the summer and this is only my volunteer experience on top of volunteering for Pediatric Therapy Network over the summer of 2016. Both of my LORs are from my science pre-requisite professor's. At this point I think my personal statement is my biggest advantage... If I do not get in, I plan to do the COPE program with Kaiser. I also applied to associate's programs around my area as a back up. I'm taking the TEAS tomorrow.

Today's waiting day has ended officially as it's already past 5pm and their office is closed now. Lets see what tomorrow brings to us :nailbiting:

@macymace I highly recommend the COPE program, but you have to make sure that you take initiative in the program, and try to make relationships with the staff, or else you'll be doing a lot of rounds around the floor. If you have the time, then you should apply for the leadership positions within the team, too.

@helloimkate

Thanks for the tip! Did you do the COPE program? It seems like a similar program to UCLA's care extenders program. I got in back in 2015, I wish I didn't drop it!

@macyymace Yes! Some floors let you do a lot, and others don't need as much help. Also depends on the hospital, but I've only been in one.

I'm so sorry that you were rejected :( I know the feeling, but keep trying! It happened to me with another school. Don't give up! CNA certification definitely helps learning about patient care. I learned A LOT :)

How did you find out? Did you check the application portal where you submitted it? I didn't see any link I could click on. I just checked my application and it still says submitted. I wonder if I am checking the correct place...

I wonder the same. But I think there's only one place to check and mine only lets me open the app.. No additional info on there...
