I am looking for some input and different perspectives regarding working in an urgent care as an RN. I am a new nurse with one year of experience of med-surg. I disliked rotating from days to nightshift constantly and after the year in the hospital, I am not sure I want my next job to be in a hospital.
I am relocating to a new city soon, and am applying to all types of positions including urgent care positions. I will be interviewing at an urgent care this week. Eventually, I would like to be a FNP in a clinic/primary care/urgent care setting; I am sure I do not want to work in a hospital as a nurse practitioner. Basically, I am looking for some different opinions if taking an urgent care or primary care RN position would be a step in the right direction career-wise. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think it is an excellent idea. The variety of diagnoses you will see and the ability to successfully triage the emergent case from an urgent presentation will be priceless in any area of nursing or NP imo. You can also make contacts in that field which will open doors for your future employment.

I left the hospital setting to work at an urgent care in my last year of FNP school. I love it!!!!
It has been a great experience! You see things at the urgent care that you are learning about and have the experience of the other providers to learn from (hopefully!). The provider I worked with would ask me what I thought about the pts diagnosis/plan after I triaged them prior to him seeing the patient. It was great to expand my knowledge!
