My staff members at my school want to have nothing to do with anything that goes on in the clinic. This means if there is an emergency they do not want to handle anything medical. This includes handing a student an inhaler. I have a brand new type 1 diabetic in my school and due to insurance problems there is only one vial of insulin for home and at school so it has to be transported. My nursing supervisor saw no issue with it but the office staff said they refuse to handle it. I am not a full time nurse so I am not here all day. This is just beyond ridiculous and my supervisor is going to try to work something out.

Public school? Your admin HAS to make a plan that works, ASAP. Can they hire a nurse for the child? Can the child have a para so the para can be with them and get them to you ASAP or activate 911 ? Can the parent come into administer insulin or glucagon?
We do have a diabetic health care plan but the office staff are refusing to be part of it. Technically they cannot be forced because staff has to be willing and able to do anything medical. I need to have some sort of support system with this.

Have the parents complain or go up the chain ladder. Diabetics need care.

Honey I am at my school full time. You should see my "trained" "Emergency" back up people freak out if I am not going to be in the building. They refuse to come down and watch the diabetics when my supervisor is here.
I went to the supervisor about this issue and she is going to my principal and then one of the superintendents.

Here's how the admin handled it in my district about 6 years ago: if you are unable and /or unwilling to do these things, we will have to hire someone who is. Still complaining but end of problem.

I feel like teachers lose common sense when it comes to health if there's a nurse around.
