Unsure if this is a reasonable job offer. Advice needed.

Hi Everyone!

I was just offered a full time day, with benefits job as a RN on a Progressive Care unit in Plantation Florida (broward county). I worked as a RN in Canada for 2 years on a busy cardiac surgical Step down unit. I have also done telemetry. They offered me, 26/hr, with differentials for evening/nights/weekends and 5000 dollar bonus. This is only a day position though, and I would work two weekends of the month. I personally feel this is a slap in the face. I was earning 32/hr in canada. I feel they have started me off at a new grad rate. They say the offer is non-negotiable bc this hospital is with a union. I have a BSN and specialty training.

ANY input would help me, as I need to make a decision tomorrow. Thank you so much!

A bird in the hand...

I think a lot of nurses who move to Florida usually take a significant cut in pay (and the justification is it's much cheaper to live here). Also, new grad rates on my side of Florida look more like 20-21 per hour.

Thank you, I appreciate the comments.

I think that is a very good offer. It's more than you would make where I am, in another state but in a major city of 2.5 million, and there would be no signing bonus.

Ok, thank you!

Hope you know how to speak Spanish. If your at plantation general!! I would say not to work there. If u can get in with baptist. Memorial or Broward Heath you are better off

It's at Westside Hospital. I didn't hear favorable things about Plantation General either. Not sure if Westside if the same. I did accept the job, so we'll see what comes from it. I was quite offended when they said I would earn 26/hr, when I am use to 33 with only two years experience and extra training. This of course is up in canada, British Columbia where it is expensive to live. I do feel, coming from Canada where nurses are well protected and advocated for by the union, we are a powerful body up there, i do feel nurses here in Florida get shafted HUGE! I'm here because my husband is at Nova in professional school there, so once he is done, we are outta Florida and probably back to North West somewhere. I'll miss the sunshine though! Thanks for posting.

With two years experience. That sounds about right for south Florida. Wish you the best of luck and hope u have a good experience there. I've been in the ER for 7 years and it is pretty rough. But the nurses and techs make it all worth it where I am at. :)
