University of Washington DNP application '16

Published

Hi all,

I am a new grad nurse very interested in the DNP/FNP program at the University of Washington. As many of you know, UW is highly competitive and is ranked #4 in the nation for nursing graduate school (I believe!). I have sifted through numerous past threads about the UW DNP/FNP program and noticed many members have been accepted to their program. As a new grad very eager to continue my education and very interested in the UW DNP/FNP program, do those individuals who have applied to the UW DNP/FNP program have any advice for those applying for the fall of 2016 (more specifically on the essay/personal statement)? Your comments would be very much appreciated! Thank you :)

I wish someone would respond to you because I'm in the same situation.

I am in the same boat as well. Are you two both new graduates? I have been working one year and am committed to another but would love to get into the program. I tried to ask about some general information regarding how they weight the applications but they didn't give me an answer. Hopefully someone has some insight as to what they are looking for!

Have you all seen the tuition prices? Might as well be a private school....

The title of this thread is kinda misleading. I'm currently in the middle of the application process and thought (based off of the title) that this was an application discussion and update thread for those of us currently applying.

As for advice, I've always heard that having a couple years of clinical experience under your belt can be one of the deciding factors after weeding out the academic low performers. Honestly though, it's just what I've heard. This is my first application year and haven't met anyone yet who has made it through into the program.

Have you thought about attending the information sessions to get some of your questions answered?

Submitted my application last night! Good luck to everyone!

Good luck KT_RN! I also submitted my application last weekend. It was definitely the most comprehensive application I've filled out.

Out of curiosity, which track did you apply for? I applied to the AGNP-AC track.

I too submitted my application for the AGNP-AC track for 2016. I'm honestly not sure what to think of the process. I have been a nurse since 2008, have 2 years ICU experience but haven't worked for almost 6 years as I lived overseas for almost 5 years. I do have my MSN but really worry about the whole not working bit. Reading through other posts some were accepted with only a year experience though. So they obviously accept students based on more than experience. I'm honestly expecting a rejection letter just because I am unsure what to think, especially my essay portions. Any one else feeling unsure about it all?

I feel my essays were my weakest point. I'm super critical of myself when it comes to stuff like that since I'm more of an analytical personality instead of the creative writer. I can bust my ass and write a great clinical or theory paper, but making myself sound good without forcing it or being a braggart is tough!

I went to most of the information sessions on campus and the question about the acute care AGNP requirements did come up. They said that while they don't look too hard at clinical experience for the primary care and other tracks, the acute care track has a pretty firm requirement that you have 2 years of recent critical care or ED experience. Hopefully everything lines up for you! Good luck.

Absolutely agree on the essay portion. Always a tough line to sell oneself and not look proud doing so. Thank you for the information on what they said. I really wish they would specifically make that a requirement or at least post it online where those of us who can't make sessions can see it. I did explain my situation in the personal statement...we will see if they give that consideration. And just when I was feeling somewhat optimistic. :/

Good luck to you as well! Are you currently working in critical care/ED? Thanks again for info.

I left the ED a little less than a year ago to take a position as a program coordinator. Hopefully that won't take away points. :|

Sounds as if you should be good!!! Again, good luck...March seems so far away :D
