I am a registered nurse currently at the hospital, wandering what my future holds for me...I go on maternity leave the beginning of July and am fearful whether I will have a job to come back to. We are suppose to find out by the end of June, all the details...we don't know how many people are getting laid off, or what areas yet.

They are crazy if they lay off any staff and insane if they lay off nursing staff, especially experienced staff. Don't they know we are in early stages of pandemic?

I take it there is no Union in your workplace... Either way, the nurses in your hospital and other hospitals nearby must take your objections to the streets and to the media. And be angry and loud about it. If there was billions to bail out crooks and incompetents in the financial and auto industry there needs to be some pocket change money to safeguard health care and safety. Make signs, march on the streets, give interviews to the local media, call your representatives, get public attention and support, get the solidarity of other nurses at other hospitals. Good luck.

Has the CEO announced how much of a salary cut he's taking?

I didn't think so.:angryfire

Actually, all of upper admin are taking a 10% pay cut.

And they are asking all medical faculty to give up 5% and/or vacation time as well.

More than that! We have a government working to bring in more cheap labor from overseas to deal with a "nursing shortage" which at this moment seems to be entirely manufactured by the health care industry, including legitimate AND nonlegitimate health care training programs. We have to save ourselves, and the only way to do that is to be as vocal and stubborn about our own human and professional worth as we can possibly be.

E-mail and snail mail your state and federal representatives. Don't be afraid to think unionization. Call local TV stations, newspaper outlets and radio stations and go to them with the facts, to wit: in the face of an horrific nursing shortage, your local hospitals and nursing homes are laying off nurses.

I also work at UIHC. While it is true that the hospital administration has agreed to "give back" 5-10% of their salaries this year the previous poster did not mention that they all gave themselves a 15-40% pay raise at the end of last year right before contract negotiations where they claimed that there just wasn't enough money to give cost of living increases to staff nurses and other patient care staff. UIHC is a corupt, top heavy organization. The best thing that could happen to UIHC is to bulldoze it into Kinnick stadium and build a new football stadium on the wreckage of that once fine institution.

It has been some time since I worked at UIHC and I had only heard about the salary payback, not the last minute pay increase. Thanks for letting us know!

I'm a New Grad from Iowa and I was told that the lay offs where not going to be nurses. In fact, the nurse recruiter from U of I told us that once she gets the budget approval she is planning on hiring new graduates. I've applied so I hope it works out for all of us. Good luck on your job.

We do have a union...as far as not cutting nurses, they said they did not want to affect patient care, doesn't mean nurses will not get laid off. And for hiring new nurses, I don't see that happening for quite some time, considering we have pool nurses that can't even get a budgeted line. We had some nurses that quit a few months back, and those positions are left unfilled. They stated that the cuts will come by unfilled positions...so I don't see where they would hire new grads or any nurses. A lot of people did do the volunteer pay reductions, and vacation give-backs, which now, if they get laid off, they won't get that additional money...how nice is that, ask them to give up vacation time, only to get laid off, and have a crappy last check.

I then find out that if I get laid off my health care spending account is canceled at the end of the month that I get laid off in. So any money that is in that account is gone. I hope If I am one that gets laid off, that it isn't before the end of June, or I will get no reimbursement when I have my baby. All I know, is good luck to us all.
