Hi! Just starting this thread for University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) MECN 2025. Good luck!

Hi, so sorry it took me so long to write back! The biggest difference between my first and second round was how much I grew during the time in between. After my initial rejections, I took a step back and reflected on the areas I wanted to strengthen—not just for the sake of my applications but to truly prepare myself for the kind of nurse I want to become.
For different people, this may look like different things. Some might need more direct patient care experience, more clinical hours, additional community volunteer work, leadership roles, or research experience. It really depends on your own vision and what you hope to do in the future. For me, my ultimate goal never changed, but I actively sought out opportunities that would better prepare me for it.
I had already been volunteering in a hospital, so I continued doing that. But I also knew I wanted to serve a specific patient population, so I got involved with organizations that supported them. I wanted to strengthen my ability to work with diverse groups, so I pursued roles that exposed me to different backgrounds and perspectives. I took on a job that allowed me to develop skills directly relevant to the work I hope to do as a nurse. Since research is part of my long-term plan, I found an opportunity as a clinical research assistant.
Through these experiences, I was asked to take on leadership roles and found ways to contribute beyond just showing up—I looked for ways to improve the organizations I was part of. I also made a point to connect with nurses, share my vision with them, and ask about challenges in the field to better understand the realities of the profession.
Everyone's path to nursing is different, and I don't think there's a single "formula" for getting accepted. But for me, taking the time to grow, gain new experiences, and actively work toward my vision made all the difference. If you're reapplying, I'd encourage you to reflect on where you want to be and what steps will help you get there—not just for admissions, but to truly prepare for the kind of nurse you want to become.

Thanks for letting us know 🙂 If you happen to know the usernames of the people you appointed, may you please share them here so we can ensure they see these requests?
