University of Calgary Direct Entry

Published

Hi,

I've seen quite a bit about the degree holder route, but nearly nothing about the direct entry route. Has anyone been through the program, or know if it's any good? I don't really like the fact that the first year is spent doing "open studies" as opposed to nursing theory and clinical...

Thanks :)

Try not to think of it as open study that has nothing to do with nursing. This is the year your going to take your anatomy, physiology, stats, psych, etc. Look at courses that are going to shape you and prepare you to actually start thinking like a nurse. I took a course in acting and performing because I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and gain confidence. A course in aboriginal studies will broaden your perspective on vulnerable populations in Canada (hint, this will be a focus for term 3) I highly suggest that you don't try and pick the easiest courses to take int he first year. Challenge yourself and try to pick courses that in turn will help you as you get further into nursing. If you can take a research methods course I highly suggest it!

Hey! I've actually been accepted into the program! I registered for classes last week, and I definetly did not take the easiest courses lol! After a while I started realizing that the first year would be preparing me for what's to come. I'm taking biology, chemistry, philosophy, psychology, kinesiology and English.

Are you in the program? If so, how do you like it?

I entered via the degree holder route this past January, starting term 4 on monday. So far so good! You do get clinical experience in term3, its just in a community setting instead of acute care. You get opportunities to go through simulations with actors, classmates, and the public, which can be intimidating but I felt like it was good experience before I get into an acute care setting. Make sure you can write an academic paper (APA), you will have one that is worth 40% of your grade in 287. Buy textbooks used, there were some I didn't even buy because it wasn't worth it . take a good look at your syllabus, sometimes you really only need one chapter from a book and you can just read that in the library.
