I recently had to begin paying union dues. I pay a union "fee" of $25 per check and a percentage to cover "dues". I'm working casual now, sometimes only working one or two shifts a pay period so I feel that a lot more than if I were working full time. I was under the impression that the fee was just a one-time deal to join. I wasn't expecting to be paying so much to the union each pay period.
Is that how all unions work? Dues and fees?

Ours is a percentage of our regular pay, plus a local levy. I'm averaging $32.50 a pay check plus another buck for the levy. Works out to $871 a year, but I get most of mine back because I apply to the union for educational funding every year for AACN and the amount they give me is $750.

I have not been a "union nurse" for over 12 years now. I now live in the south.........union is a bad word here LOL. But most of my union fee's more than offset the benifets I got from belonging. At that time, just belonging to a credit union as differs from a bank, gave me better options. Needless to say, I found a way to belong to a credit union here!

Our union dues are 1% of our pay.
Also have malpractice insurance at $.46 every two weeks through the union.
Thanks for the responses. I too used to live in the South too. There were no unions. I'm actually happy to be a union member. The union really turned my facility around from what I understand. I just wish my paychecks were bigger:D... like who doesn't?
