UK to USA new forum user!

Published

Hi All,

I'm Matt, I live in Manchester, UK where I have served all 9yrs of my nursing career. Thereason for joing allnurses.com is that I wish to take my family and myself over to the USA to live and work (permanantly).

I am looking for as much advice as possible before we set things rolling.

I have already done quite a bit of research into where we want to be (north east pref VT, NH, MA).

By using allnurses I'm hoping to find English nurses who have already made the move or anyone who can recommend and agency to use.

I look forward to any replies

Matt

Agencies do the better correspondence. First of all why do you want agency If you could possibly apply directly? Just think it twice before you proceed... Anyway some of well known agencies are Stateside Nursing, O'Greydy Peyton, Interstaff. Processing takes about 8-16 months, 2years the most depending on the visa nos. availability. Try to visit international forum and nclex nurses forum so you can have greater idea.

Hi Matt

:groupwelcome:

You will find lots of answers and willing help here, so your'e in the right place. I myself have been going through the process for 2 years now with still no end in sight so be prepared for a loooooong process, be patient and calm.

Agencies are OK if you dont want to have the initial outlay for costs etc, but remember that you are tied to them for a long time and the new OGP contract get out clause means you will be liable for $45,000 in payments!

Going it alone may put more work on you but at least you will have total control over everything. The first step is of course NCLEX, have you passed yet? Anything you want to know just ask away, you will get plenty of helpful responses. Good luck

Hi and welcome

As mentioned previous can be done without agency which is the route I am taking. Have you applied for NCLEX with BON also depending on BON may have to get CES report from CGFNS and if you are low on certain hours you may have to make them up before you can sit NCLEX. Unfortunately a lot depends on what your training was like as US training is very much generalist where UK training has now become specialist.

Be prepared for a long process and plenty of paper and forms to complete

Good luck

I am starting out in the process myself too but would like to reccomend Adevia as an agency aswell as the others listed as they have been extrememly helpful too me contacting me, emailing etc and offerign advice - plus you have the oppurtunity of using direct hire hospitals through them rather than been tied to a contract with an agency.

I did it all on my own and it took a long time but when I did it I think i t would have taken just as long with an agency, BUT I wouldnt have had the freedom of job as I do now. I am happy where I work now ;)

Please check out the Primer located at the top of the International Forum. It will give you much information that you need.

And as a special request from me, any questions directly related to working in the US, or testing for the US license, etc., please post them on the International Forum, thereby keeping things from being repeated multiple times.

:groupwelcome: Just adding to the good advice already given. I did a lot of the process myself, then went to an agent for the job offer. I used pacific health corporation, they are small & only offer work in Los Angeles & Orange county CA, I reccomend them if you are looking to move that way.
