UK Nurse Registration Full Application and Assessment stage before OSCE

Published

Hi People

I am a UK born citizen trained in Australia hence I am going via the overseas trained route. I passed my CBT test and am in the full application and assessment stage.

I am interested in sharing information with people who are also in this stage of the application.

I commenced my application in 2013 under the old process which was rejected due to lack of clinical hours. I received a letter from NMC advising me of the new process. Like many people on this forum, this entire process has been long, drawnout, frustrating and tedious for me!!!!!!!

I recieved my decision letter and I'm approved to take the OSCE. How long does it take the University of Northampton to get in contact? I've been waiting for a week and haven't heard anything. Thanks!

Hi Y'all!

I am late to this thread but everything that is being mentioned is right where I am at in the application process as well, so I thought I would hop in! I am a US nurse currently working in the state of Arizona but have been working on the UK application since Oct 2014 and am starting to get antsy. I had all of my results/application/paperwork submitted at the end of June and am just now hearing back that my police report certificate isn't informative enough. I used mybackgroundcheck.com due to a recommendation from another US nurse and had previously only submitted the "cleared" certificate. Now after receiving a request for re-submission today (09/08) I am going to submit the full report but was wondering if anyone else has insight on another (quick) avenue I can/should use to get a FBI police check. Also wondering realistic processing times for a visa if I already have a company sponsor.

As frustrating as this process has been, I am grateful to know I am in good company with everyone being in the same boat. I don't understand why approving applications takes so long... Arizona gave me my license 2 WEEKS after I passed my NCLEX which was only 2 months after I finished nursing school! Hopefully this process speeds up for us all!

Thanks for any insight!

Hi ArizonaRNLC,

I'm also a US nurse, and I've also been working on this process since October of last year. As for the police clearance, if you go to the FBI website they have information about their identity history summaries. I did mine the slow way and it took a little over 2 months to get it back. They also have some information about the "channeler option," along with a list of "FBI approved channelers" which is supposedly faster, but I was worried it wouldn't be considered as official. I really don't have any reason to think that other than I'm an obsessive worrier :)

As for the visa processing time, I'm a little confused on that. I don't know which agency you're with, but I'm working with Continental Travel Nurse. From what they told me, I can't apply for a visa until they have a certificate of sponsorship. They can't apply for a certificate of sponsorship until they have a job secured for me (which probably won't be possible until it's pretty darn close to when I'm planning on coming). They said they can apply for sponsorship on the 5th of every month and usually find out no later than the 15th. If the sponsorship is approved then you can apply for a visa, receiving it back in about 3 weeks. So it sounds to me like the visa thing will be cutting it a little close. Sort of a last minute rush, hoping it all works out and comes through before your scheduled flight to the U.K. and OSCE test date! If you have any other insight or better understanding of it, that would be much appreciated :)

Hope that made sense and helped a little! Best of luck to you!

Hey! I called the University of Northampton like 2 days after I got my decision letter but they didn't have me on the list from the NMC...I think it was a week from when I received the decision letter. But I called them again to push it along....

Hi Afro3726,

Have you got your pin already? Again well done to you. You are an inspiration! !!!

Hi Nursemicky!

I am now wishing I would have done this the long way with the "official" FBI check, but unfortunately I went for the 2 week turn around time of this company. I actually am going through Continental travel nurse as well! So I have been trying to contact them today to see if I can still submit this same police check with the full report instead of just the certificate of clearance. Hopefully I will hear back soon.

As far as the Visa process, that is all I know as well. That they can't apply for visa codes until you have an OSCE date and that it has to be on the 5th of every month. Sounds like you can't even register for the OSCE the day you get approved... So that will be frustrating for estimating times. I haven't bought a plane ticket yet, I just have a lease ending at the end of october and was hoping to leaving by then. I have a friend who just moved over and her visa (not sponsored by a company) only took 2 weeks. So it sounds like the turn around time on that is a bit quicker then expected.

Have you been approved for your OSCE yet?

ArizoneaRNLC,

Yes I do have my decision letter, and Northampton University sent me the link to pay for and register for the OSCE 5 days after I heard from the NMC. Then about 2 weeks after that they sent me login info for their "Internal Learning Platform" to help you prepare. So you can sign up for the test fairly soon after you get your DL, but they ask that you allow yourself at least 14 days of study time before you take it. I haven't scheduled it yet, though, because I was planning on coming in January and they only have test dates up through December.

So you think all you need is an OSCE test date for them to apply for sponsorship? They made it sound like they needed to have the first job all lined up, and she said that wouldn't be possible until about a month before. I really hope it can be sooner than that, because I'd kind of like to have a work visa in my possession before quitting my job, buying a plane ticket, telling everyone I'm for sure moving overseas, ect. Haha. I guess we'll see though!

I am with Continental Travel Nurse as well. I got my decision letter Sept 1 and heard from University of Northampton Sept 9 and registered for the test the same day. CTN told me they will issue my certificate of sponsorship as soon as I have an OSCE date and they said they already have a job secured for me.

I'm planning on flying out there for the test in November and coming back to get things situated and then starting my assignment in January.

Has anyone used one of the FBI certified channelers for their police check? The CTN liaison said this would be a sufficient avenue but I want to know which channelers have been officially accepted. Has anyone received a decision letter and is clear to test for the OSCE that has used one of these? and which one?

Thanks so much for any input! I just can't wait the 3 months the official FBI one would take!

Hey Melcahussey,

Yea I got it 2 weeks ago! Can't believe it's all done.

Hey guys! Just wanted to share that NMC received my barcoded forms 3 days after it got delivered by the courier. I must say that was unexpectedly fast! My online account now says that they have received my documents. All except for my state board verification though (which was also actually delivered at the same time). Hope it didn't get lost! LOL :whistling:

I've been reading this thread for months, but just now decided to comment. I'm also working with Continental Travelnurse and have been speaking with them a lot lately. I received my DL and info to sign up for the OSCE a few weeks ago. I've already paid the fee and have received some of the study stuff from Northampton, but I haven't picked a date yet as I've been told that you need to bring original paperwork. I have everything but my background checks (FBI and a local) which are at the NMC office. I started this process last summer when there were still packets of paperwork to be sent in so those 2 things were sent in. Now no one at the NMC can tell me what I need to do. I've asked if I can come pick them up at the NMC before I take the OSCE, but I was told they might not have them anymore since they scan them into the computer and don't always save originals. Last I heard, they were "looking for them" and would get back to me when they had more info. CTN advised me to go ahead and get new background checks so I'm getting my FBI one through a channeler this time because I don't want to want the 3+ months. It took almost 4 months to get my other one last year. Hopefully those will work if my orginals can't be found. I don't want to book the OSCE and show up just to be told that my paperwork is inadequate for a reason as stupid as this.

Anyway, it's nice to hear of other people working with CTN too. If all goes well, I plan on flying over there in October or November to sit the OSCE and then come back to the states to wrap everything up and enjoy the holidays before going over there in January. I also want to have my pin and visa and job all set up before I quit my job here and move. Are any of you planning on working in London? It would be nice to have a nurse friend to meet up with over there once we all manage to get through this gruelling process.
