UK Nurse Registration Full Application and Assessment stage before OSCE

Published

Hi People

I am a UK born citizen trained in Australia hence I am going via the overseas trained route. I passed my CBT test and am in the full application and assessment stage.

I am interested in sharing information with people who are also in this stage of the application.

I commenced my application in 2013 under the old process which was rejected due to lack of clinical hours. I received a letter from NMC advising me of the new process. Like many people on this forum, this entire process has been long, drawnout, frustrating and tedious for me!!!!!!!

To ease everyone's anxiety regarding all the waiting and issues with the NMC. Here's an update from their site worth reading:

http://www.nmc.org.uk/globalassets/sitedocuments/registration/overseas/common-issues---overseas.pdf

NMC's slow assessment is really frustrating. I uploaded documents and submitted as required in their website in the middle of March. I didn't hear from them by May so I was worried if any document went missing(I didn't know that I could check on the website by then). I called NMC in the middle of May and the guy on the phone said they received all documents and asked me to wait for the assessment. I live in London so I decided to visit NMC to push and there, the person I met told me one document from USA didn't arrived. (Fuming!) ..Finally I got confirmed all the required document arrived on 5 June and NMC emailed me to wait for assessment. Now that I think of, my police clearance has expired because of the slow NMC process!!! I will have to go to the embassy to request for a police clearance letter again and will post it to NMC before they will email me that I have to resubmit the police clearance. And then reprocess again...

Finding health care assistant job here in London while waiting is not easy so now all I do since I resigned my previous job is sitting at home, waiting to hear from NMC.

Hi JEBurrell

I truly share your sentiment. I too have been a victim of this long-drawn process since May 2013. My application was paused during the 2013 changes and I was told around March 2014 that my course lacked the required training hours. I then began the latest process November last year and undertook and passed CBT in Feb. Two days ago the NMC informed me that I had to send in a UK police check I guess because the Aussie one dated Feb has expired and that I am once again based in UK (even though I am currently in Aus working as an RN). I am so concerned that this may put me back. They are truly the most frustrating, unreasonable people I've had to deal with.

I too questioned the IELTS as I am a UK citizen born and bred. I was told that everyone has to be treated equally....

With regards to my degree certificate/academic transcript. The degree just states the course name and that I passed etc i.e a normal certificate. The academic transcript just shows the units undertaken and the grade for each one, no hours. Your university should have sent a "Transcript of Training" in which they list the theoretical and clinical hours of all units taken, plus a list of the clinical placements. I asked my uni to send a copy of the document and exactly that was on it. In summary your uni fill in the "Form to Accompany Transcript of Training" and will include a separate "Transcript of Training" document for the course. Is the NMC asking that your university send details of the hours or are they requesting that these come from you? I am pretty sure your uni has to send these details on the "transcript of training". You may possibly be confusing the academic transcript with the "transcript of training".

I agree that they are deliberately prolonging things. I have had to delay my final return to UK unitil beginning August as I do not want to be jobless and still waiting and waiting for my DL.... I had initially made plans to leave Aus in June thinking that I'd be able to book the OSCE! The fact that they require a new police clearance is so worrying. I've read on this site that if they require additional documents you instantly go back to the bottom of the queue!! I am in limbo at the mo....

Hope to hear from you soon....

Hello UK Gal

just wondering how your application is going? I am in a similar situation, I am English and lived in Australia and trained in Melbourne at Monash University and returned to UK November 2012. Since then it has been a continuous battle beginning with the IELTs. I questioned why non EU nurses had to take it when EU nurses did not. You can't win so I just paid the money to sit it to get the application process started. In November 2013 I received my decision letter stating I did not have the required number of hours. I have written to my MP and also had contact from The House Of commons about this, they replied to me stating that the NMC is an independent body and there is nothing that can be done - the whole process is just so insulting and pedantic. When the new system was launched I was ecstatic and certainly did not envisage another nightmare scenario but here I still am nearly ten months later. The latest contact was asking for hours for each unit I studied as on my transcript it just says credits which apparently is not acceptable. Does your degree certificate state hours next to your subject? Also the health form which was completed by The Occupational Health Department of the NHS Trust hospital where I worked needs to be re submitted to clarify if they were my employer?? I swear they just look for any little thing to prolong the process. This has caused me a great deal of stress over the years not to mention the loss of potential earnings. I am so close to giving up but my natural tenacious nature is spurring me along. Would love to hear back from you and to share stories. Wishing you lots of luch, all the best :)

Hi Hellsing, BSN, RN

Are you sure that the request for additional documents means that you will be placed in the bottom of the queue? Did thec NMC inform you of this? I read a post on this form or the NMC Test Online forum that someone was invited to do OSCE within a week or so of submitting additional documents.

I am really frustrated as they require me to send a new UK police clearance.

Guys like I said, it's always best to email them regarding any concerns or queries because when they reply even though it takes a week or so for them to, it's in written format which means it's more reliable of a response coming from them.

if you want a faster response, better call them and speak to an agent. Agent's don't have much access to your application if it's still in the assessment queue so you can ask them to consult with the international team regarding expired NBI clearances etc. because the internaional team handles our papers. In my experience, consulting with agents alone gives me a headache because of their inconsistent answers that's why I resort to email because I could use their responses as reference. Most agents speak as if they are not interested in helping you out but there are some that are really helpful, you just have to be really assertive.

Going back to the NBI Clearance, in my fellow applicants case, he was asked to mail them a new clearance because the one he uploaded was already expired. They won't accept you emailing it to them. They will only accept the new one by post and then scan it again and put you back at the bottom of the queue for reassessment. Sad to say, there is no fast track way if they need additional documents from you if you are for reassessment that's why I advise that before clicking submit and sending all your forms to them, you have to make sure everything is perfect. Otherwise, you are really going to wait for a very long time. The sad reality of the NMC's system

Hi UK Gal

my university fully completed the theoretical and clinical hours on the form to accompany transcript of training. What they are asking for is hours for each individual subject. I have asked the university for this but went onto the Monash website this week and they have archived handbooks with all unit descriptions and hours so I am thinking that I'll just print off the lot of them and send them. They have accused me of not sending in original document too which I find highly insulting when I know for a fact that I have. I asked for my degree certificate from my previous application to be transferred over to the new system. They said it was a copy, which it was, but it had been certified by a solicitor. The first one I sent in that had been certified by my bank but they wouldn't accept that and practically accused me of tampering with it...... .??? They also said that to transfer the certificate would take time and that they would have to ask for it again during the assessment stage, I'm really confused about what they mean and have emailed for an explanation. I might just bite the bullet and get some more certified copies to send, got to see my doctor for my health form anyway and send in a UK police check, probably will then have to apply for another Aussie police check even though I left in 2012 - so whats a few more quid after the hundreds it has already cost me??

Good luck with everything and keep in touch :)

the problem was that i had my declaration of health signed by an NP rather than an MD.

NMC will not give you any information about whether the documents are sufficient, even if you call to ask, until you are done waiting in the brutal "queue."

to add more frustration, my documents were "assessed" back in january under the old process and my form was also completed by an NP. they gave me no feedback or indication that this was not sufficient. had they done a proper assessment, i wouldn't be in this situation. alas, they do not care.

Dear UK Gal,

Not to burst your bubble but yes that is what the NMC said. I might not have been required additional documents from them but based on my fellow applicants' experience, when they were asked for (mostly) new police clearances as well as their DoGH, they were put back at yhe bottom of the queue. As for the one receiving his DL within the week after he was asked for more info, i believe it was someone i know because there is this case within my fellow applicants where the nmc emailed him they needed more info but he just explained his side to them via phone and he got his dl within the week.

Hi! just sharing...I passed the CBT last March 16, submitted almost all of the requirements by April 30 except those from Saudi Council and Saudi employer :(. Around June 4, finally completed everything, and by June 11 NMC emailed me that I am now on the assessment queue and will have to wait 70 days or more for the result. Still waiting, hope to hear a positive response from them soon! ^_^

Hi JEBurrell

Am I correct in saying that your university only completed the "Form to Accompany the Transcript of Training" and did not include a separate "Transcript of Training" in addition?

Where as the Form to Accompany Transcript of training required hours on the following AREAS:

General or specialist medicine

General or specialist surgery

Child care and paediatrics

Maternity care

Mental health and psychiatry

Care of the elderly (geriatrics)

Community or primary care nursing

The actual "Transcript of Training" which your university should've posted with the "Form to Accompany Trancript of Training" should have included theretical and practical hours of all your studied modules for example as below:

UNIT TITLE .............THEORY HRS.............PRACTICAL HRS--

Acute care nursing ----100 -----------------------100

Bioscience --------------100

Sociology in nursing ---60

Acute Care nurs prac --200 -----------------------400

Mental H nurs prac -----100 -----------------------100

Nurs prac foundations -150 -----------------------150

Perspectives on ageing 130

Physiology ---------------150

This is just an example and figures made up. It needs to be drafted by your uni on their letterhead or at least contain their stamp. They should have sent it alont with the Form to Accompany Transcript of Training. Take a look at the NMC's "Form to Accompany Transcript of Training" on the top of page 1 it highlights what is required from "The head of the training institution". If I were you I would copy and paste this info onto an email to your uni.

Sending in units outlines will be very tedious and they may not accept that.

I hope this helps..... Sorry for being so WORDY.....

Hi I'm on the assessment stage and preparing at the same time for the OSCE. Any tips or advice. ? It's very expensive so we want to pass first time. Please share any info.

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know how to contact the university of North Hampton I got clearance to take my OSCE today and have had a look around the site but don't see how to contact them to book it!

Thanks :)

Dear dana_canada,

You can find it at the bottom of the second page of your decision letter. Wait for a second email from the competency test center of the university of northampton for the payment link for the OSCE.
