quick question. my NMC RGN license expired sept. 2008 and did not pay renewal fee this year. i have RGN license thru overseas training back in the early 80s in reading, berks and since moving in US since 1991 and working as a US RN... I have been paying 3 year renewal fees since...
i did not renew bec i am so poor right now...lots of cancellation in agency work and low census here and there. i want to hang on to my blood money.:redbeathe
do i need to do the entire RGN overseas course thru NMC if i do decide to go back to uk? BTW....i am originally from philippines and am a UK/US citizen.
happy new year to all. thanks silverdragon and sharrie in advance for your kind advice.

I doubt it because you already have a UK license although will probably need to prove you have kept up to date and also nursing hours

I agree with Silverdragon, you have already been registered with the NMC so they already have proof of your suitability to practice as a UK nurse, it is definitely worth checking with them, they may require you to do a back to nursing course should you wish to return to nursing in the UK.

When I left for Canada my NMC fees were due. I called them to ask if it would be necessary as I was leaving the country. I also asked what would happen should I want to come back in the future.
They said I didn't need to renew & that my practice & training hours abroad would count if I re-applied for admission to the register in the future. I don't know if that's just because it was Canada but I suspect that USA/Australia/ NZ - anywhere with good nursing standards/reputations are fine.

i renewed for the 3 years as i was leaving, but my uk licence is not able to be renewed while i have no hours of practice in the uk, so i presume its put on hold, and if i return i would have to do a return to practice course, even although i am practising over here, thats what i understood that they told me, but depends who you talk to as to what information you are given. dont know how you can keep renewing your uk licence of you dont work there, as the criteria is hours worked in the uk not in the usa
cariad, i would re check on that as i am sure as long as you are nursing abroad it is counted and ok.
this is what is says on the nmc website
have practised for the required amount of hours overseas whilst registered with the relevant registration board or licensing authority

back in the days, i have given NMC Continuing Education copies here in US and i had no problem. i cant go to uk just to get continuing education ....wish i was rich like kate winslett or joseph finness....:wink2: or be a rocker like mick jagger.
silverdragon, i am still paying student loan up to now for continuing education ie legal nursing certification, etc..... but this year...i want to hang on to my dollar for as long as i dearly can and decided not to renew it since it expired august 2008.
thanks all for your replies....:heartbeat

If you do decide to go back to the UK I don't think you will have any problems as nursing in the US and licensed by a state. After this year I doubt I will be renewing my NMC but will see what I am doing a bit nearer the time
thanks anna i will check, i dont intend going back but you never know. the health system in the us, is for healthy emplyed individuals, as soon as you have anything worng with you and can twork it sucks. i am okay right now, but dh depends on me staying employed where i am as any new insurance company woud not take his cardiac or bad back issues if i moved. so like i say you never know when we might have to return,,,,,,,,

I asked the NMC that very question and I am in the USA- here is what they told me by email:
"•Once you allow your registration with the NMC to lapse for over 3 months, you will be required to make an application for re-admission to the Register. As part of this application you will be required to declare that you have complied with the PREP standards: 750 hours of registered practice in the previous 5 years and 35 hours of learning activity in the previous 3 years."
So that does mean that if you keep up your hours & training you'll be fine, which is what I was told.
Mind you I've absolutely no desire or intention to come back to the UK! :-)
i keep up with hours and training in US...or do they credit that or do i have to go back to school in uk meaning ie adaptation course ...do they consider us nursing continuing education credits? just wondering....
