UIC GEP - adding neonatology speciality??

Hello all,

This program really appeals to me as a student who has had poor grades ages (as in 13 yrs ago ages) ago in an unrelated major but whose recent undergrad grades are stellar. However, the only potential drawback for me is the unavailability of an option to obtain a Neonatal NP. I am currently interested in both Pediatrics and Neonatal but have a strong leaning toward Neonatal. I would like to keep both option open as I progress down this road. I have talked to some admissions counselors at UIC who said they were "looking into" the possibility of adding NNP to the program. I am hoping maybe someone here in the program with more inside info will know more about this, including possible timetable.

If the admissions counselors did not have a timetable, it's unlikely anyone here does.... you can always add an NNP post-masters certificate, or seek out direct-entry programs that do have NNP tracks in place. I would avoid being part of the first NNP class in any program. They just can't anticipate problems, and you will be their guinea pigs.

You are right, guinea pig would not bea good situation.

They guy I talked to said he had heard rumblings about a track being added, I was hoping maybe someone in the program had heard m ore from profs. Long shot I know :)

Do you know how long a post-Master's certificate takes?

Also, keep in mind that most NNP programs are going to require some NICU experience.

Post masters programs usually take 12-18 months.

And you need to have 2 years of Level III NICU experience to get your NNP.
