Hi! My name is Alvin and I just wanted to create a thread for anyone applying to the UCSF MEPN 2018 cohort. I created a poll up at the top for everyone to choose the area they wish to specialize in since that seems to be a common question based upon previous threads and cohorts. I think you have to be part of the forums for a specific number of posts before they allow you to take part.

I have also asked their help desk to take a look at why some of us are unable to take part as another individual has tried and was unable to select their area of interest from the list. Hopefully, they will come back to us and let us know if they can apply a remedy.

I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts, ideas, concerns etc. Hopefully, this will be a good forum to get to know one another and help each other throughout this entire process.

Hi @TangoDeux! I'd love to hear about everyone's backgrounds & share tips.

I am applying to the FNP speciality. I have a social studies background and got a 3.6 in undergrad. Since college I have served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala and most recently worked at a community health center as a health educator (where I got to work with FNPs and learn to love their lives! Haha)

Now I am taking pre requisites at night and working as a health educator at UCSF part time.

Im nervous and would love any tips/advice people have!

Thanks in advance

Hi @axelandra! Welcome to the thread. My background in Business Mgmt and Economics and I will be applying to the WHNP/CNM speciality. I am about to start my last pre-requisite then all of my requirements will be complete. I've been working towards this for the last two years so I am actually quite excited to explore the program and to start the application process. Hopefully, we will have more people joining the thread as the date when the application opens becomes closer. I look forward to speaking with everyone to get their thoughts and insights as well.

Hi Everyone!

I'll be applying for the AGPCNP specialty as well. I am currently finishing up my last prerequisite. I've been working as a clinical research coordinator for the last 2 years in the department of gynecologic oncology. My goal is to eventually work in an oncology setting. Does anyone know how many people they are accepting for the AGPCNP specialty? Good luck to everyone applying! :)

Hi @bay_np, welcome to the thread! Glad to see more people joining as the application opens in 15 days. I am not exactly sure the number of AGPCNP but from the info sessions that I have attended and the threads that I have read on Allnurses, the number of people they take for each specialty is dependent on how many people UCSF admits into the M.S. program which has priority for the various specialty slots. The more people they admit to the M.S. program the less slots they have for MEPN candidates. That being said, they told me at the info session that in general they admit around 60 students into the MEPN program and at least for WHNP/CNM, they usually have around 13 to 16 in that specialty some years more and some years less then that amount. The most recent CNM/WHNP MEPN cohorts has around 15 people based upon their profiles and pictures that I saw at San Francisco General where it is posted in the staff break room where the nurses can familiarize themselves on who the CNM/Midwifery MEPNs are. Hope that helps.

Hi @bay_np, I re-read some of the notes I have been taking for the program re: the number of applicants to the various specialties and the breakdown that I came up with is as follows:

FNP - around 18 spots (the largest speciality among the MEPNs)

CNM/WHNP - anywhere between 10 to 16 (the second largest speciality among the MEPNs)

Since the program accepts approximately 60 MEPNs each intake, then around 25-30 (half the spots) will go to the remaining specialities. I tried to find specific numbers for AGPCNP but from just counting the number of posters that identified as AGPCNP applicants in previous years on Allnurses and taking into consideration that not all the MEPN applicants were part of the Allnurses boards; I suspect that there are around 5-8 applicants each intake for AGPCNP. Let me know if this jives with your own research.

Hello everyone,

I'm working on my application tonight and thought I'd say hi. I'm really excited and nervous about the months ahead as I'm sure others will be, too. Not sure how often I'll be posting, but it's so good to support one another. I'm applying for the CNM/WHNP specialty, same as @TangoDeux.

Best of luck to all!
