UCLA MECN Fall 2014?

Published

Hi- Is anyone applying to UCLA's MECN program for next fall?

Hi guys -- I spoke with -------------- yesterday and he said that not all acceptances have been sent out. So there is still plenty of hope. I really think one faculty member just happened to finish their pile, so lets all take a deep breath. and congrats to all of you who got in! It must feel so great :D :D

Around 30 or so people made it in from waitlist.

Speaking of waitlists... Didn't like everyone from the waitlist last year make it in? I think I remember reading that from a previous thread.

Yea. But that's because they had to fill in 90 spots. However, I believe that this year the number of spots will be back to 70 again. That being said, having to fill in that spot will be easier and less people to get accepted from the alternate list.

This makes me feel a little better but I still don't understand why some would be done while others aren't. They have a limited number of spots. It's not like they take everyone who has certain qualifications. They'd have to rank us somehow. I'm so confused!

What is the confusion? There are many explanations as to why and how they are delivering the information, in what order, etc. Every program within a school can handle Admissions processes very differently. I've been involved in admissions at every kind of higher level institution imaginable and they all deal with it differently.

Given how **** poor UCLA's handling of admissions has been independent of the fact that they are down a person this year, I would not jump to conclusions. Relax, people. Everything will be fine either way. Have faith.

It's confusing because I don't like the idea of being denied because I happened to be in a really competitive batch of people while someone else got in because they were in a batch of less qualified candidates. I'm sure there is something more systematic than that. I can't imagine the wave of frustrated emails and calls that the admissions office is getting right now.

Has anyone been accepted yet today?

I don't believe so. Nothing has changed on my end.

Ah, I see what you are getting at.

There are always subjective factors that come into the admissions and interviewing process. I would certainly hope that their batches by admissions counselor were divided and distributed equally. Had they not have been, their process is inexcusable. However, if you are worthy of admission and if you truly stand out, if your personal statement sells your candidacy, you will be in.

Personal statements hold much, much more water for adcoms than do recommendations. I have rarely seen a poor recommendation - the reason for that is obvious. The reality is that everyone has stellar recommendations. Because UCLA does not interview (which is weak sauce - MD/DO and PA schools who get 5x as many (and more academically qualified) applicants all do), your only real way to separate yourself and round out your app is the personal statement. If we have all done that and we don't fit a typical nursing applicant profile, we will get in. It is where they run into tons of the same exact type of candidate where things become difficult.

Somebody applying for an MSN just posted on their thread that they just got an acceptance email from -----------. That group started hearing a few days ago and looks like the acceptances are still coming... this is good news :)

I haven't heard anything yet. I've been lurking this thread since October. :p

This is giving me anxiety! but your updates have given me hope that I might still have a chance. It's really killing me though, I had a hard time sleeping last night. haha
