UCLA MECN Fall 2011

Published

Hello,

I saw that the MECN application for UCLA has been posted today. Is anyone applying to the Fall 2011 program?? I haven't found a thread going on yet...Maybe we can share our questions/concerns regarding the application process here.

I have a question for those of you who are currently in the MECN program. I know that unlike some other Direct-entry NP programs out there, UCLA MECN only provides MSN with CNL eligibility. Also, I heard that students are discouraged from working while going thru the MECN program since the program is very rigorous.

With that being said, I wonder how difficult it would be when the students decide to become an NP at the end of the program and have to apply to the Post-Master's program all over again. Also, I want to ask if there are some students who are working per-diem/part-time at a hospital while maintaining a decent GPA in class.

Thanks in advance!

awhile back i posed that same question to a student services coordinator at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Nursing. she told me that after graduating from MECN, if you decide to become an NP, you can enroll in a 2-year post-master's certificate program. it's a non-academic, non-degree conferring program so perhaps the admissions process isn't as difficult.

here's some more info:

i hope that alleviates some of your concerns!

Fullerton was due yesterday the 28th. I dont think anything will be heard for awhile.

Haha you're right! I just feel like I applied so long ago! It will probably be at least a month before we hear anything...

I know I did submit it forever ago too. I had to look up the due date because I was unsure as well : )

Thanks lilpeapods,

wow.. two years of masters, probably couple years of experience as staff RN, and then two more years of post-masters.. Makes me wish I had a BSN to begin with! =(

Goguema, if you want to start as an NP right away MECN may not be the best choice. UCSF, Cal State LA, and Western Universties have direct NP programs. They are 3 years. That being said, my sense is that even if you do one of these programs you will still spend some time as a staff RN but they may make more sense if you're set on NP. Also do your homework as to what a CNL is and is not. It is largely an IDEA at this point and has been implemented on only a very limited basis at the VA and a few other places. When you finish you will be a new-grad who is better marketable with a Masters Degree from UCLA but you will not be working as a "CNL", you will be working as an RN. However it will definitely be easier to advance your career later... no matter where you want to go having that extra edge on the BSNs will go a long way... so I believe and hope :) Good luck everyone!

Hey BethanyS,

I was going to apply to CSULB after I found out at the USD interview that they reopened it for 2011 (it was closed when I checked last year due to budget cuts). I know their Nursing application isn't due til later this month but the university application already passed in November. Did you turn in a university application just in case? Because I don't think we can apply unless we did that in November. Please let me know if I got my information wrong. Maybe private message me so we don't keep this thread off track?

Thanks!

Goguemah,

I heard and read that all programs that prepare APNs (including NPs) will have to be a doctorate by 2015 so it might actually be a good thing you're getting your masters first. By 2015, hopefully you'll be able to go for NP. At the very least, whatever program you get into will make you an RN, which is a requirement for most if not all NP programs. I've also heard (although haven't found any reading materials to back it up yet) that by 2020, they will require all NPs to have training at a doctorate level. You might want to look further into it.

Yes, that information is accurate, I applied to the university back in November just in case. It seems like it's harder to get in that one, the student academic statististics are really high.

Do you live in the LA area? I assumed that those in the immediate area would get the letters today if they really did mail them out Monday. My mail typically comes early so I guess there's no point in rushing home during lunch and checking if no one else in the LA area received a letter yet. Such a bummer.
