Hey everybody
I am considering moving back to Southern California. Huntington Beach to be exact. I work in the operating room and am trying to figure out where I want to work. I can circulate pediatric and adult surgery. I was looking at Hoag because it is very close to HB and then I was thinking about UCI medical center because it is a teaching hospital, Im assuming. I work at Vanderbilt in Nashville right now and love the teaching environment.
I would really appreciate any input on this.

Wow... FLIP FLOP! I am a California RN with extensive OR experience relocated to Nashville. Let's just trade places! I still have a condo in Orange County. The OR at Hoag, which I have worked, is VERY , ugh, what is the word? Clicky? I got my foot in the door about 9 years ago because of someone I knew. That's how it works there. Not a high tech environment and you will deal with mostly ortho and cardiac issues.
For cutting edge and an opportunity to be respected, trained and valued I would suggest ICU. Hands down. Since you are coming from a teaching environment, transitioning to UCI would be a great fit for you. PM me if I can be of any help, if you need contact information or information regarding neighborhoods, etc.
I travel home every few months.

I reinforce the recommendation for UCI. The cardiac nurses rule at Hoag, and unless you want to be on that team (which you can't, unless you're young, blonde and white), you'll feel like an ugly stepsister. They are Dr. driven and do lots of electives on call.
Thanks you guys. This really helps. I don't want to feel like the ugly stepsister I'm 38,dark brown hair and half cuban half Puerto Rican.
I will find that darn glass slipper that fits.
Well I applied at UCI and have not heard anything yet.
I would really like to hear from someone who works or has worked in surgery at UCI.

hi,
i work at hoag, but i went to school at JH in Baltimore. Hoag is not a teaching hospital. UCI is the only big teaching hospital for Orange County. Since you're coming from TN why don't you try UCLA or USC?
Is your :redbeathe set on Orange County? look at UCSF and Standford.
I refuse to work at any UC as of right now because i don't feel like paying extra money for parking and monthly union dues, but that's just me...i went to a UC school for undergrad and i feel i've paid enought for parking...sorry for the blah blah blah
Hoag defenatly had the reputation of Hotel Hoag and the views are amazing from pt's rooms....all you see if ocean...in OR and ER not so much, but nurses do love their pts and trully all of them show great care for each pt. i know if i ever got sick i would choose Hoag over Uci due to nursing care
hope this helps

Yes, this helps. I do have my heart set on OC. I was born and raised in southern california. I really do like the teaching environment. I have learned so much just from listening to the attendings while they teach the residents. I originally started out in a non teaching hospital and like the teaching environment better.
My husband went to Stanford not too long ago. It would be an option if I wanted to be that far up north. For now I want to stay a little further south. I love taking quick trips to Mexico.
OMG, parking is crazy where I work. We pay about 35.oo a month to park, which I think is sickening, and some people still have a 5-10 minute walk to the facility.
thanks again
UCI has upgraded their parking and security situation a lot so that would help. They are also a little slow on their response time, my advice, get a name of someone, a director in a department your interested and shoot them an email.
How true about Hoag! I finally WENT BLOND just to fit in!!!!!! It didn't help. I'm a squeeky wheel. I agree with the OP about wanting to stay in So Cal. I miss it everyday, it was 80 degrees today there! What happened here in Nashville? Pouring rain, wind and slow recovery from our recent tornado...... I wanna go home.....
