Thanks for the link, the only hospital I am near is BIDMC, all the postings are for advanced practice or experienced nurses. Good news for someone like me bad news for new grads.

Also it is sad to link we need a need to tell us out of the 5000 hospitals only 15 is hiring, although many hospitals are not listed who are hiring.

confused.. too many contradictions.... No shortage, no hiring.. now hiring... layoffs.. etc... brain about to go crazy...

This is the reason why this forum needs to be moderated. First, I don't understand why LatinoVNStudentRN2B posted this link in the International Forum. I understand this is his first post but maybe Latino can answer that question. Also, while members have the freedom to choose a user name, I am sensing an intentional use of a name that is very similar to a regular poster in this International Forum.

I don't dispute that these hospitals are hiring. However, the news item did not specify whether the hospitals are also sponsoring visas for foreign nurses. For instance, the University of Michigan Medical Center is listed and I'm sure they are hiring even new grad RN's. However, realize that this hospital is unionized and both RN's and advanced practice RN's are members of the labor union. To my knowldege, this institution has not sponsored foreign RN's for a while.

I'm sorry I had to drag the foreign nurse issue in this post.

Many U.S. hospitals are hiring RNs, except most of them are hiring only experienced RNs. I don't know of any local hospital at least here in the SF Bay Area that have sponsored any foreign RNs lately from outside the U.S.

My former hospital hired new RNs but they are already in the U.S. and none was hired from outside the U.S. Now they have a hiring freeze because of the economic recession. They haven't laid off any RNs yet but they have already laid off Certified Nursing Assistants. This means that there are less people available to help the RNs with bedside care. I even saw one CNA from my former hospital being interviewed on t.v. after she received her pink slip (lay off notice).

Times are tough, folks. I don't think many U.S. hospitals are in the mood to hire foreign nurses when there are available American nurses looking for jobs. If you are a foreign nurse with no hospital experience then you need lots of luck to get a U.S. nursing job.

Consider yourself lucky if you are a foreign nurse waiting for a relative-based U. S. immigrant petition. It may take a while to get to the U.S. but at least there is hope for a chance to come to the U.S. and work as a nurse.

I know many readers don't like reading this, but this is the truth. Consider other countries for now and get the necessary hospital experience while you wait for retrogression to end.

Some of the information may not be current. I'm back in San Diego visiting and met up with some of my old managers from one of the Scripps Hospitals. They are definitely on a hiring freeze until after their next budget meeting in January.

Just as a follow-up to the situation on hospitals in SE Michigan and my previous posts on foreign nurse recruitment. I just found out that my hospital has actually recruited nurses overseas. A group of ICU nurses from the UK and Australia will start working in our unit in the next few weeks. Don't know the detail as to how their visas were processed and how long it took to go through but the Management Team actually went to the aforementioned countries and did the recruitment in person. These nurses are experienced from what we're told. I guess I'm out of the loop in terms of nursing issues at work since I am not part of the nursing department anymore.

Hmmm... Please try and find out what type of visas they are on (H1B for specialist critical care?), would be very interesting to know.
