TX abortion vigilantes

Published

The state of TX has a new law that provides for anybody to get a $10,000 bounty by suing any person discussing or assisting a woman in any way to have an abortion after six weeks, I.e., before many women even know they are pregnant. The burden is on the person sued to deny it, and if they win they cannot recover their legal costs. This means a driver, a friend to whom a woman confided, someone who bought her a bus ticket, a vindictive ex, clergy, a clinic receptionist, a neighbor you don’t like, a competitor, a restaurant where you didn’t like the service, a ref whose call you didn’t like … all open to being sued by anyone, and the burden on them to refute. Your rapist could impregnate you and then sue you. There are no exceptions for incest, pregnant children, or rape. There are obvious constitutional difficulties with this, information on which can be found in many sources. The SCOTUS declined to block it for the nonce, but have NOT invalidated Roe v Wade and are awaiting further suits.

A private group has put up a website where anonymous people can report any “suspicious” cases, which they will then refer to authorities…and I’ll bet they’ll expect to get the ten grand for every one. It is presently being flooded by fake reports, many hilarious. It’s taken off on Tik-Tok and Twitter at pic.Twitter.com/xgpvESdc5b  If you’d like to join the fun, you can. As I said on another thread:  this is going to get very real when an angry 16 year old turns in their mother.  Also, the people who are suing have no standing since no harm was done to them.  But SCOTUS has become a theocracy now and once that happens, justice goes out the window.  We are coming into Handmaiden territory where women will become forced to have unwanted children  (and how's that working so far?) OR we'll just return to the good old days of the 60's with women attempting to use dangerous techniques to abort.  With any other supreme court, one wouldn't even hardly have to be a lawyer to point out the defects and dangers of Texas' attempt to tie women to the stake and punish them for having sex.  But with  the the mullahs we have in place now, who will speak up for them?  What will they do to women who smoke, drink, drive too fast, resort to coathangers? Gonna put them all in prison?

Pro life or pro choice, this "reporting" on people is wrong. Is this really happening?

Yes, and not just on women seeking abortions but on those “abetting” them as well.

I always do a bit more research than what I read here.(no offense to anyone). What are the sources for this? Thank you.

The link to the legislation was included in the thread of comments.  You must not have bothered to read the thread, either.

... not whether this legislation had been passed and implemented.  Have any suits been brought against anyone?

Thanks for keeping track of the dialog...

The vigilantes will have to sort through all of the bogus reports to find pregnant women to bully and further victimize...so far they haven't managed to make their scheme functional. That's really no surprise.  The point isn't too being lawsuits against women, the point is to intimidate women to behave the way the conservative christian republican believes they should behave.

Justice Department sues Texas over restrictive abortion law

Attorney General Merrick Garland called the law "clearly unconstitutional."

Quote

..."That act is clearly unconstitutional under long-standing Supreme Court precedent," Garland said at a news conference. "Those precedents hold, in the words of Planned Parenthood versus Casey, that 'regardless of whether exceptions are made for particular circumstances, a state may not prohibit any woman from making the ultimate decision to terminate her pregnancy before viability.'"...

I believe this law is a slap in the face of women, and especially those who are marginalized by race, economic status, etc. This archaic and absurd law shoves women and reproductive rights back to the 1950s. It is my opinion and only my opinion that abortion should be the last alternative to an unwanted pregnancy. I don't like abortion, and honestly- who does? But, I would rather my sister, GF, friend, or whoever be provided with abortion services in a sterile and highly regulated safe environment rather than an illegal back-alley abortion mill. Women who can afford it- will travel to neighboring states for abortion services- leaving those who cannot afford it and who are in desperate situations to potentially seek dangerous alternative methods of ending their unwanted pregnancies.
