Tulsa Hospitals

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Hi everyone!

I start 3rd semester at CSC in the fall. I am wanting to work in Tulsa upon graduation. I have heard that Tulsa hospitals hire new grads to their ER floor. The ER and possibly, later on, ICU is where I want to work.

I have a few questions. Which Tulsa hospitals do you think have the best ER? Which hospitals have the best working environment, such as benefits, nurse/pt. ratio, shift differential pay, etc? I actually would prefer to work midnights, so that is not an issue.

Also, is it better to apply before I take the NCLEX or after? I have read that some people apply to jobs and they will hold them for you till you pass the boards.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

As for which hospitals are better, I'm biased and say St. Johns! But honestly they are all good. St Francis has a trauma center so if that's what you're interested in that might be the best route. I do know that St. John's is in the process of constructing a new Trauma ICU. The hospitals will hire you before you pass boards, actually even before you graduate. While you are waiting to take boards you can work as a graduate nurse tech. PM me if you want more info on SJMC. And congrats on getting this far!

I would love to work trauma. I love the fast pace of the ER. During clinicals last semester, I enjoyed my day in the ER the most.

Thank you for the information.

Thanks also for the congrats. During 2nd semester, I was not sure if I would ever see 3rd. Now that it is a few weeks away, my nerves are kicking in. I am just trying to keep myself busy before it starts.

I just joined this site but I wanted to add my information. I just went from St. Francis to St. John's and I have to say I like it a lot better!

And it is true that SJMC is opening a new trauma unit. It's scheduled to open in January & I am looking forward to it a lot! I've been hired for that unit & am now orienting in one of the other ICU's.

Welcome to Allnurses and WELCOME to St John's!!!!! I'm on 8west. Which unit are you working on right now? Is the new unit going to be on 8east or is the current 7east unit going to move back up there? They sure are making a lot of dust on our floor!

Thanks! We will be on 7E and AICU will be moving up to 8 when the renovation is done. I'm orienting in SICU right now on day shift. Talk about a shift from working nights to having to be there at 0630 every day. At least I get to go back to nights when i'm done orienting LOL.

Ehich college is CSC? Where is itlocated? Doesn't St. Johns have several different locations? and are they all pretty equal as far as working conditions/environment goes? Like for instance what about the smaller facilities in the surrounding areas of Tulsa? TIA

Yes, St. John & St. Francis both have multiple locations. The main campuses of each system are where you will find the majority of their services. The others are in outlying areas like Owasso, Broken Arrow, Sapulpa, etc and tend to be a lot lower acuity with limited services (ie St John Owasso doesn't even have an ICU).

The smaller ones tend to have a more relaxed feel since their acuity is not so high & they are smaller so you know more of the staff on other units & such. The bigger ones are a bit more stressful with higher acuity & you often don't know a lot of people outside your own unit.

How long have you been in nursing if I may ask? did you have your initial orientation/residency through St. Francsis? what has the orientation been like at St. Johns?

I've been nursing for about 9 years now in critical care. I initially had a travel assignment at St. Francis & stayed there off & on for travel jobs for 2 years. So far the orientation has been great at SJMC & they seem very devoted to making sure you have all the information & tools you need to get the job done!

CSC is Connors State College. The main campus is in Warner and they also have a campus in Muskogee.

Specializes in I've done it all except CCU & OB.

Hillcrest Medical Center. The Worst Experience Of My Life!!! Nurse Patient Ratio During Days Is About 7-8 To 1, The Night Shift Patient Ratio Is About 9-10 To 1. We Currently Have An Lpn Who Just Graduated And Just Got Off Of Orientation. He Had 12 Patients On His Own About 2 Weeks Ago, And I Was The Lucky One Who Got To Follow Him And Clean Up The Mistakes And Things Not Done, Plus Take Care Of My 7 Patients That Day. Out Of All The Shifts I Worked There, I Can Honestly Say Only 1 Or 2 Of Them Were Pleasant. Some Very Nice People Work There, And Some Great Nurses, But The Hospital Administration Is Under The Impression Evidently That Nurses Are Work Horses And That We Are All Expendable.

Best Wishes.

I Have Heard Good Things About St. John's. Go With Them. Word Of Mouth Is Always Your Best Bet, And It Appears Other People Have Responded With Positive Feedback Re: St. John's.

Good Luck In Nursing, I Truly Hope For Your Sake That You Like It More Than Most Of Us Do.

God Bless.
