Got financial details on travel position in Raleigh, NC, and I need your input! Steady nights on M/S unit at $18 per hour and $245 non-tax weekly per diem. If I assume a 25% tax rate on what I make in Pennsylvania and the travel position, I am only making $75 more per week (which I will use to pay my half of the rent in Pennsylvania). I imagine staff nurses there with 3 years of experience make around $24 per hour and another $3 to 4 night differential. I think I am being robbed. Thoughts? Perhaps it's because I don't consider living and working in Raleigh a dream situation? Sending out an SOS... : )

Hey there...

I am originally from PA and came to NC in 1999 as a travel nurse. Back then travel nursing was in high gear and I made great money. In 2003 I took a perm assignment in NC as float pool RN and made about 28 hr. I briefly went back to PA from 05-08. Raleigh is a great city and you will not regret coming. I have been an RN for about 15 yrs and working in float pool make a about 32 an hr, plus OT etc. PM for more info if you are still interested.

Thanks, bonesrn! As it turns out, the folks at Duke Raleigh decided to hire a traveler with experience. I guess I am disappointed because I was submitted for ortho positions in Santa Barbara, CA, Columbia, SC, Charleston, SC (x2), and Raleigh, NC, and, for one reason or another, I didn't have an opportunity to interview for any of the positions. I had faith in my recruiter initially, but, now, if I were to continue pursuing travel opportunities, I think I would request a different recruiter.

What company are you with? Duke and UNC are the hospitals that use travelers the most. Not sure if Wake Med uses them? The housing stipend for the area should be around 1100-1200 dollars a month and I wouldn't take anything less than 28/hr. I know that Cross Country and Clinical One have contracts in Raleigh with Duke/UNC. Good Luck!

This offer was from RN Network and, from what everyone has told me, it is pretty low (especially since I would not qualify for night/weekend differential). I ultimately told them (and the other two agencies I registered with) that I was putting travel nursing on hold for now.
