Transitions Clinical options

Published

In our last semester of nursing school, we have a class that is like a clinical, but we pretty much are one on one with an actual nurse, all by ourselves. For this clinical, we get to pretty much pick where and when we want to work (for the most part, sparing availability and all that jazz).

I work at a facility and am pretty much guaranteed a job on the floor after I graduate. It is a med/surg floor. I plan on working there for 1-2 years before going into a specialty area. So that job will just be a stepping stone for me.

My question is this: would you choose to do your transitions clinical on a med/surg floor, or would you go for a specialty area you are interested in? I feel like I would get sort of a jump start on my med surg learning/orientation if I go with that floor, but would also like to learn more about my passion/specialty area.

What would you do?

I think what is more important is what YOU want to do. It sounds like you have already made a choice that you are comfortable with. The learning experience is hugely impacted by the teacher and the area you choose. I am a preceptor for one of those sites so your question gave me a chuckle. It might be nice to start med/surg prepared.Alternatively you will see alot in ICU. There are no mistakes with either choices. Good luck

Thanks for the response,

I really haven't made a choice yet. I really have mad respect for med/surg nurses, sorry if my post came off differently, I reread my post. I might just end up loving med/surg and stay there forever for all I know.

Also want to add that my 'passion' so far has been PACU or Gastro, if that makes a difference.
