I am a Practical Nursing Instructor. I have had a transgender accepted into my program. He/she is a cross dresser, presents as a female but has male sex organs. I had no control over this person getting in based on numbers only. What are your thoughts on this issue? Should we allow a nurse to take care of the patients who misrepresents their sex? I feel that it is wrong. Nursing is much too personal at times.
This is strictly my OPINION!! The Instructor does have rights. It could very well be against her religion. How can she justify, teacching someone whom she knows is living in sin? Doesn't that violate her beliefs? Why must every one tell everything about themselves? When did it become appropriate to tell EVERYONE about their sexual orientation?? I have absolutely NO problem with people being homosexual, transgendered, transvestied, etc as long as they keep it to themselves!!
I don't tell anyone what my sex live is like because it is NONE of their business.
ISMT that when someone comes 'out of the closet' thatey are trying to draw attention to themselves, as if they are special humans. They are not special, but they are human!!
My daughter had a homosexual friend who insists that everybody cater to him, because he is different!! Unfortunately, this kid is also a liar and a thief!! I have told her that she can not judge all homosexuals by this one person. Not all homosexuals are liars and thieves. Just this one.
Would I have a problem with transgender or homosexual nurses? No, I don't think I would. A female doctor delivered my daughter and a Muslim Male doctor delivered all 3 of my boys!!
All I am asking is why must people outside the norms of society try to push their crap [whatever it is] down our throats?
I am a Christian and sexual conduct outside the realm of 'normal' as set up by God [to me] is wrong!! Yet no one thinks that Christians have rights. All I hear is I am homophobic, and all kinds of hate spews out of people's mouths when I mention that I am a Christian.
Am I not being discriminated against, because I believe in Someone higher that me?
I do not mean any insults. I am just stating my opinion!! I have my flame suit on.
How very hypocritical of you. You've just shoved your "lifestyle" down my throat, because you've managed to mention your children, obviously a product of your heterosexual lifestyle, and your Christianity in one post. You are obviously entitled to your opinion, but I wish you wouldn't shove your choice of lifestyle down my throat. The very fact that you are so comfortable talking about your family, and the ease of which you refer to them shows you have no understanding of the situation at all. If gay people mention their family or partner they are doing no more than you are....just trying to live their life.
I do not live outside the norms of society, as you perceive it...I live in society...working, living, loving, paying my taxes etc. I'm certainly not the freak you like to portray here. When gay people (or even transgender people) come out, it's not to "draw attention to themselves", it's to find acceptance and recognition for who they are, in a world that wishes we were invisible. Your attitude is precisely the reason we need to come out, otherwise I am quite sure people like you would rather we were just invisible.
I also find the way Christians push their crap down our throats completely innappropriate. The funny thing is you probably don't see the irony or hypocrisy in what you said.
By the way...I found your post completely insulting. You may believe that your Christianity is the natural way for you, as I believe my homosexuality is the natural way for me, but the only difference between us is that I don't assume superiority. I will never understand why some people choose to use religion as a weapon, yielding it to bludgeon the unknown aside, instead of as a tool of understanding and love. Maybe you need to go and read the bible more carefully, as I feel you might have missed a few finer points, namely the ones concerning love, understanding and acceptance.
I am absolutely astounded at the unabashed display of prejudice and ignorance displayed in this thread. Some of you should be ashamed and start to question how appropriate your choice of career is. I wouldn't mind at all having a transgender nurse look after me, but I would certainly have issue with a judgemental bigot as a nurse, especially if I knew his or her views of me might make a difference in the care I would receive. I always assumed that the bywords and essence of nursing were care, compassion and empathy, little of which has been displayed here.

I worked in a practice with transgendered patients and help transform male to female and female to male.....These people have to live a lifestyle of the gender they are adapting. This has to be done successfully before surgery is even considered. This is all part of the transgendering process.
If the person is transforming male to female and is wearing female clothing and such, they should be addressed as a female. They are not doing this for fun as stated before like a transvestite....transvestites like to dress in oppisites clothing and such but do not want to become the oppisite sex.
This is this persons life. Keep and open mind. Will probably be one of the best students that you have.....

I deal with this kind of thing fairly often. In the prison where I work we get inmates who have started the change and not finished due to being arrested. They have been on hormones and have the breasts of a female and still have a member. This presents a problem because male inmates want these people to be their "*****" in othere words want them for sex. We have to keep some of them in PC or protective custody. On the other hand I know of a person who went through the nursing program at the college I attended. At the start this person dressed female and had been on hormones thus had larger breasts. The person acted female. The students around this person had no problems dealing or coping with this person. During a break the final surgery was done.....Cathy ("the person") returned to school very happy and excited. The instructors who had her through all her schooling treated her just like any other student. Now I don't believe in messing with what God gave me but if it made a positive change for Cathy good for her. Last I knew she was ding fine. Just treat your student as you would any other. It may be rough due to personal beliefs but you will see it will be for the best. Bridge problems as the arise, you may not have any. Best of luck to both of you.
If I were lying sick in a hopsital, I would be concerned about my own health and receiving a decent quality of medical care. I would just want a good nurse and I don't think I would care who they were. If I could tell that they were transgendered (from what I've seen on TV you can't tell a lot of times) I may find it somewhat interesting, but I most definitely wouldn't make an issue out of it. It isn't right to discriminate against someone based on race/religion/ethnic background/ age/ or sex so why would it be right to discriminate against someone that is transgendered?
When the time comes that I need some medical attention, please feel free to send a an entire team of transgendered nurses my way. :)
I work with one who became male to female. All of us who work with this RN were prepared way in advance when she decided to go through the change. Everyone was really supportive and respectful of this person. Some who did not know but were informed of the change were somewhat uncomfortable. A few from time to time will make inapprropriate comments, due to immaturity or their own discomfort. I personally admire the courage and the strenght of these people to go through this huge change. I can only imagine the challenges they must face. I offer all the love and understanding I can to this people. This Nurse I work with happens to be an excellent one an an awesome person to be around.
Im a CNA currently and a Nursing student. But Im a Transexual as well MtoF.
Ive encountered a few small minded CNA's at the long term care facility were I work to support my college needs. It aint cheap LOL. But these type of people are the exception not the rule. The LPN's and RN's I currently work for beg me to work their wards Im blowing my own horn here but it is true. I was excepted and hired as Michelle. The company that owns the facility has hired others like myself in the past (The Dir. Of Nursing called them before they hired me and apparently they were all excellent nurses.) I was excepted in school my instructors are ok with my transexuality. The only thing they asked was that I only dress one way not switching back and forth I have not been dressed male in two years. So this was not a problem I dress casually except for my clinicals other students ask questions and i give answers no one is concerned with it so classes are great. I am good with patients and residents When someone yells help they dont worry about what I am they just want a nurse any nurse. I will always strive for excellence in my nursing.
I want to thank all the nurses who show the open mindedness To work with anyone regardless of gender issues Anyone dressing outside theyre own home has had many hours of counseling and is probally more stable than most quote "normal people" Nurses are in short supply And Good nurses are harder to find. But there are many good nurses here thanks again Michelle Roth CNA/MA
Yes Even in Lancaster County some people are ok with seeing me as transgendered. Not all. The Lancaster County Prison fired me three monthes after they found out that I was Trans. I was an officer 18 1/2 years So the bed here is not all roses LOL Now though Im living my dream as a nurse.
