I am a Practical Nursing Instructor. I have had a transgender accepted into my program. He/she is a cross dresser, presents as a female but has male sex organs. I had no control over this person getting in based on numbers only. What are your thoughts on this issue? Should we allow a nurse to take care of the patients who misrepresents their sex? I feel that it is wrong. Nursing is much too personal at times.
If we help reelect this terrorist maybe we are all deviants?

and "evil-doers" as bush likes to call 'em!
Just an FYI if anyone is interested in addressing legislators about gay/lesbian/transgender/bi-sexual issues or just finding out more info about the barbaric laws some states have you can go to the following links...
The National Gay and Lesbian Task force
The ACLU site for gay rights
http://www.aclu.org/LesbianGayRights/LesbianGayRightsMain.cfm
or if you just want to compare your beliefes to those of the candidates go here...it's a site driven by AOL/Time and has a series of questions regrding your level of agreement with certain issues and then gives you a list of candidates that have similar inclinations...

The terrorist in the whitehouse are going to cut the pay of nurses by 25% or more by eliminating their overtime pay. Bush has promised to veto any attempt by congress to prevent this cut and he has sent written instruction to employers around the country on ways to get around paying overtime. Will that destroy nursing, and if it does is that a definition of terrorism? Never fear the Democrats will reelect Bush. Dean, Bush, they don't seem to know the difference. What does that have to do with transsexuals, nothing except to some they are deviants, and so is the behavior of our "leaders' in the terrorist headquaters on capitol hill? I think thats the kind of deviants we need to be concerned about, more than our fellow nursing students, and the last post commented on Bushs acknowledged unworthyness which the previous post commented was grounds for expulsion!

This post is idiotic and extremist, IMHO. Let us continue to discuss things in a rational manner please.

Will you think the same thing a month or so from now when your employer puts you on 6-12s for strait time, or lays you off and puts your co-worker on 6-12s so they are only paying benefits for one employer?! This was life in America everywhere before the democrats ennacted the overtime protection laws about 70 years ago. even for children, remember. Have you ever worked 6-12s, 7-18s, like I have as a Vietnam Vet. ; out in the oil rigs. Thats idiotic extremism !! Its not what I am becoming a nurse for. And you'll be crying the loudest when it hits you real soon. There is nothing rational about it, its not extremism, its terrorism towards the middle class of working people in America from the white house. Lets stay calm though, we can always take out our frustrations by sending our children overseas to fight for some other countries freedom. No terrorist, or extremist could ever be that rationa! Or we could e-mail, fax, write, call our congressmen
They are currently fighting it in the white house and asking for our support.
Im happy with most of the responses I read The religon thing
I thought the law stated no religous practices in school. Big court cases over that one Oh by the way previously i was a correctional officer or prison guard for 18yrs. Next In this State the first thing done is a visit to the shrink who talks and adminsters tests to rule out Bi polar/Schzo/Manic Depression and many other disorders then and only then can you procede with transition
Sane-Insane we have been checked throughly. Cathy please talk him/her and definately set ground rules Dress oneway or the other not both.
I discussed this with admissions a month before starting Both my instructors were informed who and what i am they were given my phone number and asked to call me if they had any questions they never called And I was treated no different Then any other student and my GPA 97.5 I am at the top of my class. Talk to her explain your concerns and listen a good nurse is a good listener.
My classmates took a week before they started asking questions
I answered them honestly any tension in the class was gone after that. They treat me just like anyone else The girls are especially great during breaks and lunch we talk of guys and beauty they found Im a weath of knowledge into the male mind (Sorry guys you can call me a traitor later LOL) But weve grown close The guys to they want to all the details men ask Breast size
and those type of questions I keep them professional though. One Last Point so everyone understands this Is not something that can be controled 99% of repressed or supressed Transexuals commit suicide because they cant stand this problem they live with and they cant hide anymore I personally had three attempts in my past But Im much better now. Well Ive said enough on this I do Talk to much sometimes now on to another subject.

I'm outta here...but it was a good discussion from most posters ...while it lasted. :)
Cathy...best of luck in your situation, I can definitely empathize.
Thats not all that has been hijacked, today, with the passage of the Republican Omnibus bill "Nursing " lost its federal protection of overtime pay. If you don't have a union contract, you're employer does not have to pay you overtime any longer. The Bush admin. further more is actively encouraging employers not to pay overtime and instructing them in ways to avoid ot even when there are contracts. Once your contracts are up there will be much less likelyhood of new contracts with overtime protection.....unless a new administration comes along to restore it. I am sorry about straying from the thread, but there is a common factor, discrimination, internal and external, and there are people trying to justify their discrimination under various disguises. I praise those who are not and I will try hard to honor their support, and to honor Nursing for those who do.
Iam out of here too.
These posts have certainly been enlightening. The majority of the posts were enlightening, some crude, some to the left or right. Everyone has the right to form their own opinions and belief systems and may act upon those as they choose. The line is crossed when those opinions and beliefs interfere with another persons. ie: you must believe what I believe and act the way that my belief systems says you must (not that I necessairly act that way myself - double standard). It seems that the USA is hung up on anything related to sex.
NurseCathy: I hope these posts have helped you and ultimately your student(s). Take heart. "Nothing is either good or bad unless you make it so." Keep an open mind and heart and allow everyone to be themself (whatever or whomever that may be).:balloons: :balloons: :balloons:
You know, I've been debating editing the off topic posts and decided that perhaps the thread is almost over anyway. But folks let's all try to respect each other's threads, and know that you are free to start your own discussions. Especially those "current events" topics- keep 'em corraled in the CE forum, as some members want to discuss nursing on a nursing board. Thanks all for a great discussion.

From one Michelle to another, I have enjoyed reading your entertaining and informative posts. I would be proud to have you in my class and would probably pump you endlessly with questions for insight into the male mind;) Anyway, good luck with your career and I am sure you will make a great nurse. Take care.
On a related topic, i am a 2nd year nursing student. I happen to be transgender. I have not yet started clinicals. Does anyone know if legally they can stop me from doing them? I don't see how gender identity would stop me from being an effective nurse, in fact I have a 4.0 GPA as of now. None of my instructors have given any indivation that it will be an issue, but I am wondering if there is a possibility that ne could spring up. And if so, what would my legal rights be?

Dear Jessie
My name is Michelle I am also a nursing student and a Transexual. I've done clincal rotation. My gender issues help me rather than hinder me. I have a greater feeling toward my patients. And being MtoF They all can talk to me about anything. no embarassment at all. My Instructors have been very supportive and treated me as any other student. I do not think you will have any problems. I know you will become an excellent nurse. And if anything does go wrong your legal rights will be under your state and local anti-discrimination laws you might want to read up on them check at the local courthouse for that information. Oh and my GPA is 3.9 I will have to work harder LOL. write me if you like or if anything happens Good Luck Girl
