Transferring RN License

Published

I'm a new RN licensed in Rhode Island but would also like to be licensed in Massachusetts however I'm not sure how to go about doing this? Has anyone else done this? Do I just go to the state board of nursing's web site?

Thank you!

You go to MA's BON website. Print out the applications (if applicable. Some states do the entire process online.) Regardless, you're going to ENDORSE your license. There should be a page in there for you to send to RI BON for them to fill out. Send in applicable fees along with the paperwork. You may need fingerprints and other miscellaneous things (some states require HIV classes etc).

RI is a compact state. Not sure if MA finally got the compact status yet. If/when MA does get the compact status, you can work in MA with your RI license, I believe. Don't quote me on that though.

Just recently checked the MA BON site for compact status, and it still is not a compact state. Maybe one of these days.....

I did the opposite of you, I live in MA but got my RI license, but I'm a new LPN not an RN. I've been working in RI since November, graduated last June. It was fairly easy to do but I had to stay on top of the RI BON because it took them forever to approve it and send my license. Do you have a place in mind where you want to work? Good luck!!

You apply for licensure in Massachusetts by reciprocity. Massachusetts is not a compact state.

I'm a lifelong resident of Massachusetts... are you pursuing getting licensed here for any particular reason? The job market isn't exactly great for RNs up here now, especially new RNs. Not trying to discourage you or anything.

Could anyone help me to find out how to transfer my new Arizona license to Massachusetts? I went to the website suggested and could find no links or information about this process. They only have applications for people who practiced out of state with lapsed licenses...

MA uses a company out of Nashville, TN, here is their website with the information. Good luck!
