transferring excelsior nursing courses to traditional program

Published

Hi everyone:

So this may seem like a backwards question, but I've been an LVN for 7 years. Got all my pre reqs at cc, then started excelsior and have taken all nursing course exams. Just need FCCA and CPNE. Problem is my hospital, which I love and have been at for 4 yrs just informed me that they are not likely to accept my degree through excelsior :( So question is, has anyone heard of a cc or traditional bridge program accepting the transfer of excelsior's nursing credits. If so, making the student participate in the clinical portions of the course? Just wanting to know if anyone has any insight. Thanks

I seriously doubt another nursing school will accept those credits. Most nursing schools won't recognize other school's classes, whether it was EC or not. You'll likely be starting from scratch if you go to a traditional school.

Your employer needs a reality check. If you're an RN, you're an RN. The Texas BON is continuing to license EC grads who pass the NCLEX. There are many, many EC grads working in Texas. I'm betting you might even have some at your hospital.

I,too am from Texas. I worry about the situation regarding Texas and EC, but I feel as long as I remain enrolled that I will be grandfathered in, and like Lunah said many EC grads pass boards and become licensed each day. An Rn license is an Rn license as long as our boards say it is. I work with a lady that is an EC grad. She is an excellent nurse...One of the reasons I decided to take this route in the first place. We can do this. Your employer needs to make the decsion upon the type of employee you are because if you are a good worker at present...chances are you will make them a good RN. I don't know how staffing is at your employment, but our staffing is critical, and they are pro EC. We are even having trouble getting Agency at times. Hopefully your place of employment will open their minds and just be there to promote you once you get your license...That is what they did with my friend...And...if..."When" I get to that point they are planning on doing the same for me. Good Luck to you with your endeavors and Best wishes! Traci~ West Texas

Don't give up on your Excelsior education, especially since you've made it so far! Have your hospital HR or whoever told you that they won't accept your degree to research Excelsior for themselves, if they don't know Excelsior is an accredited school (which some employers don't know) because they're not familiar with Excelsior. Just like Raggedy Ann said, if you're a good employee, they'll want to keep you! I'm curious as to know exactly who told you that they're not likely to accept your degree, a coworker, manager, or the Director of Nursing? Try talking with the person in charge of the whole nursing department in your hospital.
