Totaling catheter output

In my facility, the CNA's empty the catheters at the end of their shift, they mark the output on the resident's ADL sheets and report it to the nurses. They are not on strict I&O. They have adequate oral intake. Is there anywhere in regulations that says they must total a 24 hour output?

I would think that would depend on your facilites policy. At the two hospitals I've worked at it's a non-issue because both had computer charting so there were shift as well as 24hr totals done automatically.

We use 12 to 12 as criteria.As the cath.bags are emptied it is added to a running total.Last emptying at 12mn shows the total for the whole day.

We empty and chart Q shift unless it's full in the middle, then it gets emptied and charted then. I'm anal though.. if I see a bag starting to get full, I will empty and chart it, then empty it again at the end of the shift.

I have computer charting at work, so it totals automatically every shift.
