Hi,
I know that this has prob been discussed before, but I just want an opinion....
My girlfriend and I are planning to come to Melbourne from the UK in August time, currently we're going through an agency for the job, but am thinking that maybe I would be better off applying directly to the hospitals.
I'm just worried that the agency does not seem to be producing much in the way of results, and if they do get me a job, they don't really do anything additional anyway, its still up to me (or the employer) to sort out the visa, accommodation etc.
I've already got my application for registration in, so any opinions on agencies? I was thinking of staying with them, but then applying directly for a couple of jobs anyway, sound like a good option???!!
Any tips gratefully received!!!

Apply direct it seems to short circuit the process but they might want a guarantee of stanying on for a period of time.

I am a RN Div 1 from the US living in Melbourne; I would recommend that you apply directly to the hospital, you will not have a problem getting a job.
Good luck to you.

Try checking out hospital websites - what is your specialty?
Off the top of my head, try:
www.alfred.org.au (The Alfred Hospital)
http://www.mh.org.au/CAREERS/ (Melbourne Health group)
http://www.svhm.org.au/infoabout/careers/careers.htm (St Vincent's hospital).
A lot of the sites do direct hiring, and some do agencies - check www.seek.com.au or www.careerone.com.au for jobs, as well as the newspapers www.theage.com.au or www.heraldsun.com.au
Not been hugely impressed by the agency so far, so sent out some of our own CV's but the agency found out and we got a bit of a slapped wrist!
We're now looking at Brisbane instead without the aid of an agency and already have an interview with the Princess Alexandra Hospital!

You need to decide on the pros and cons of agency nursing.
Do you want to decide when and where you work? You could also be cancelled at the last minute.
OR
Do you want to work in one location permanently and be guaranteed work?
Could one be more exciting than the other?
Not sure if I have helped or not ....

To agency or not, its up to what your lifestyle is.
I worked for a public hospital for 13 years, when I needed them the most got this :trout: You see I also nurse my mum at home she is palliative, and I couldn't get shifts to suit.
So I went agency, they have been great, I love it, work when I can, and they understand my needs.
There's alot of work out there, sometimes you just got to chose whats best for you at the time.

I came to the USA last year through O'Grady Peyton International. I was adviced by several nurses to rather do it myself and did not listen. Now I have only regrets. I have had the whorst experience ever and OGP treated me like dirt. I have no recourse as I do not know the legal system here and they take full advantage of this. Do it yourself. If you where smart enough to get a nursing qualification, you are smart enough to navigate setting up jobs and your visas. Good luck and enjoy Ozzie!

Hi Jade I suggest you check out Nurses Board of Victoria website, and also the Australian Nursing Federation www.anfvic.asn.au the union here will help you with your questions.
Good luck and hope you come to Vic we need all the nurses we can get.LOL
