Thoughts on MDAnderson in Houston TX

Published

Hi,

I would like to open a discussion about MDAnderson in Houston TX. Specifically the one at TMC. I recently got an offer from them, and I would like to know what other nurses that are currently working, or used to work for them have to say. Also, do they offer opportunity to cross train? for example to OR? (I have almost 2 years of experience in med surg and surgical trauma)

You most likely will not get to cross train in a specialty as different as the OR from Med-surg. You may be able to get some shifts in Stepdown/PCU type units and could certainly schedule shifts with the float pool. But looking at specialties as completely different as the OR, ICU, NICU, PICU, L&D etc, those usually need an extended preceptorship that cross training would be impossible due to the inability to have consecutive shifts. Basically you would have to be hired into one of those units and accepted as someone who will need extra effort, such as an internship or residency.

You might get more answers about MD Anderson itself by posting in the Texas forum. Congratulations on your new job.

are you comfortable to share how much are they offering? I'm from NY and soon will be relocating to Houston. I've been applying to MD anderson since Feb. Hopefully I get a call back soon.
