HI
I am thinking about making a job change. I have worked on a med surg floor for 4months I work 4nites a week on 8hr shifts. It is very hard and it is over 45min from home. The hardest part for me is the mean AM nurses. I am trying my best but I don't think it is good enough. SOme nurses are nice most are not. I get nasty comments and they belittle me whenever they can. I also work at a LTC facilty about 10min from home. I have worked there for 4yrs as an aide and now I am training to be a relief supervisor. I know I would be a good supervisor and I have enjoyed my training so far. I have not had any bad nites at the LTC. I have asked if I could work one nite a week at the LTC and go down to 3nites at the hosp. That way I could keep my med surg exp going and learn more as a supervisor.
What do you think

[color=olive]well, in some ways, i would love to say, feel free to leave - but sometimes the hard thing is the best thing. you only have 4 months experience @ the hospital. as you gain more time and experience, you'll figure out how to better do your job. that will give you more confidence, which, in turn, will make you stand up for yourself in front of the morning crew. this will then force them to shut their traps & give you more respect. i tell you this from experience. i still got some flack from one particular nurse on day shift, but the rest would shut up & let me give report. i wouldn't recommend making any changes just yet. the med/surg esperience is invaluable in a managerial position. that way, you can be a true asset to the other staff (especially if any of the patients start to go downhill medically). i don't know if this makes sense - hopefully it's helpful. if your manager @ the hospital isn't looking to get rid of you, i wouldn't try to run too fast. good luck!
Thank you for your input. I plan on staying at the hosp at least until I have a full yr of experience but I may decrease my hrs from 4nites/wk to 3nites/wk. And I hope to get one nite a week at the LTC facility as a supervisor. I found out that I would not get a full time supervisor spot at the LTC facility for another 2yrs when the one supervisor plans to retire. So if this works out I will stick with both but only if I can decrease some of my hosp time and get a nite at least twice a month at the LTC facility.
THanks again

I think if you are truly unhappy then you owe it to yourself to look elsewhere. For the past couple months I was also telling myself I needed to stick it out for a full year, but something smacked me last month and I was finished. I applied for another position, interviewed and was offered the job, took it and I am done with my current job. You'll know when you reach that point. For now if you think decreasing your amount of nights will help, I suggest that first. If it ever gets to be too much, start looking for a change, it sure can't hurt to try. It also makes those crappy shifts a little bit better when you are able to say to yourself, "I'm trying to get out of here. I'm trying to get out of here. It *will* happen..." That gave me a little motivation and calmed me down. :)
Good luck to you!!
