Theatre nursing

Published

I couldn't find theatre nursing on here, so I just wondered what theatre nurses do and what courses there are to become one after doing A levels at college.

Thanks for your time!

You're probably looking for our Operating Room Nursing forum. There is also a UK forum, which would probably better address your concerns related to education.

Good luck and welcome!

I moved your thread to the UK forum. I hope you get some responses here.

Theatre nurses are usually general trained RN's who once qualified go to work in theatres. Jobs vary from hovering around the theatre whilst surgery in going on to running for equipment if needed or passing instruments to the surgeon. If it is just theatre you want to work in there are OPA's which are just trained to work in theatres but are not nurses. There may be other stuff and I am sure someone may come along to offer more advice

Do you want to be a nurse or do you want to work in theatre's?

i love nursing an d theatres.

i qualified and went straight into theatres. if you want to just work in theatres the adcise about ODP (operating department practitioners) is a good choice, it was a two year diploma but i thing they are changing it to three years.

or you can do you general nurse training and go straight in. the job description for my job was no experience necessary only a love for theatre... and you do need that, it can be very stressful and demanding, it can mean long periods of concentration and standing still, but there is definatley an adreninaline rush with it if you like that kinda thing.

hope this was helpful

good look in your choices

what courses there are to become one after doing A levels at college.

Courses for those wishing to be Theatre Nurses should include:

  • How to dodge surgical instruments thrown in your general direction - the nurse needs to learn how to react and flex like Keanu Reeves in the Matrix

  • How to cope with the temper tantrums of others - experience of living with children (especially shopping with them when you won't let them have sweets and they lie down on the floor and scream and then shout at you a lot) would be helpful

  • How to mouth expletives behind a mask without being caught out

  • Medical worship - a bit like religious worship. OK, a lot like religious worship.

  • Counting

  • Metalwork recognition

Specializes in renal,peritoneal dialysis, medicine.

heheh OG you really are naughty

i think what kay was trying to say is that you can work in theatre without actually being a nurse

staffordshire uni has just started a course aimed at this, 3 years i think dont know if its diploma or degree level though

working in theatre always reminded me of working in a garage, especially orthopaedics. :roll
