I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can. My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.
He's not going away.
Haberman's book is out based on interviews. I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting. Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with. LOL
Quote“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Tweety said:Which is how he was able to get the show, because people knew his name. He was self-promoting long before then. We tend to know rich people like that. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Bezos are known for just being rich and successful in business. They could parlay that into book deals and TV shows.
However, The Apprentice put him in the mainstream and I think that the show elevated him from "rich celebrity" to icon.
Thats a subjective opinion, of course. As is mine.
Yes, that of course was how he got the show. After the first few seasons the ratings were pretty mediocre. And before the show he was very popular with Oprah (at the height of her popularity), the Clinton's, etc.

I won't fuss about semantics on whether he had iconic status prior to the Apprentice. I knew who he was and certainly many people did. He certainly was popular and parlayed that wealth and popularity into the public conscience. Back then of course we didn't know what a liar he was.
Do you think he would have been able to become president without the mainstream success of the Apprentice? Guess we'll never know.

Well ... he certainly wasn't popular with his contractors, his business partners or the people of New York. People who knew him best tried to let the rest of the country know these things. Why did nobody listen?

Trump Casino Atlantic City: History, Development, and Demolition
Quote
...Marvin Roffman, a gaming industry financial analyst, had told Trump beforehand that one casino would cannibalize the other, a claim Trump disregarded at the time. He stated that the casino would need to generate a daily revenue of almost $1.3 million to break even, which isn't feasible. And he would be turn our to be right.
This prediction was also followed by hundreds of contractors who stated they were never paid for the work they did in constructing the building. These events resulted in Trump selling his interest in the company in 2009, despite operating for nearly 20 years. It continued operating under the Trump Entertainment Resorts company until 2013, when they sold it to the Mereulo Group, headed by Carl Icahn.
After it was closed, Icahn sold it to the Hard Rock International Group, and in 2018, they reopened it under the new name and brand, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino AC, under which it still operates today. Today, the casino ranked second among the nine Atlantic City casinos in generated revenue in Q2 2023.

The Truth About the Rise and Fall of Donald Trump's Atlantic City Empire
QuoteThe reality of the mogul's success on the Jersey Shore doesn't always square with the story he tells about it. Trump once had an Atlantic City empire. But he didn't sell it — he lost it.

That was my point. The Apprentice had little to do with it, imo.

He actually had contractors. business partners, banks, etc work with him over many years. Must have been to most of their benefit. Some worked with him over and over, and new ones came along.

And he won the debate, women are getting post-birth abortions, Haitians in Springfield are "illegals" eating our fur babies, and the 2020 election was stolen.

Common sense and truth are Trump's kryptonite.

He was known for hanging around with cool people like Epstein, pretending to be his own PR spokesman, he was known for promoting wrestling, for racism, womanizing, and for cameo appearances on sitcoms and Sesame Street. Does stuff like that make him an icon?
