I was recently offered a job at a local hospital pending my background check. It has been two weeks and they still don't have it processed! The head nurse from the floor has been touching base with me every couple of days. I tried calling hr myself and the lady was sooooo rude! What should I do? I need to start working!

stop in for a face to face. Ask them if there is anything else they need to expedite your application, since "such and such" has been calling me and touching base.

Do what MassED suggested. If they see you in person and contemplate that you will now start bothering them in person, it might motivate them to move your packet along just to get rid of the possibility of seeing your bright and shiny little face on a daily basis.

I am a little confused, since the NM is aware that the hold up is from HR, she/he can expedite things? Aside from that, am not quite sure what you can do besides possibly asking to speak to someone else or a supervisor from HR.

I hear and understand your frustration, but I think you would benefit by calming down.
The nurse manager has stayed in close touch, which is intended to reassure you that she stands by her offer and is ready to bring you aboard as soon as possible.
It sounds like you are assuming that the delay in your background check is HR's fault. It may or may not be. And given that the nurse manager is remaining in touch, there is nothing more you can do to prod HR to move faster, even if they are the hold-up. As you have learned, all you will do is aggravate them.
I suggest that you keep in contact with your manager and ask her if there is anything you can do to speed the process along. If she says, "No," then remain cheerful and thank her for her time. You will do yourself no favors by ticking off HR.
I know it seems unlikely now, but there will come a time when you will kill for an extra day off. Enjoy it now.

stop by the hr office ask to speak to the supervisor and politely ask what can be done to expedite your background check. if they give you a time line say check back so-in-so then show up againa and request what you need .
sometimes the hr dept are really busy and i have known some to wait until they had a certain # of checks to do and would complete all of them at one time.
my last position, my back ground check took 2 weeks, the one before that only 2 days.
good luck and keep politely asking!!
