The election 2024 Thread

Published

I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.

Get out the popcorn for this one.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

Let's not waste too much time hoping that the Republicans would emulate the grace of Tammy Murphy.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. named the Bay Area lawyer, entrepreneur and philanthropist as his running mate. She brings some welcome cash to what will be a costly effort to gain ballot access....

Like so many others who have amassed a fortune from the tech sector, Shanahan has become a philanthropic force but also a political player. She was the leading donor behind Kennedy's unexpected Super Bowl ad in February and emerged as the top contender for Kennedy's vice presidential pick after a few days of speculation that NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers was in the running....

Here, compiled from her public remarks, profiles and her own philanthropic activity is the definitive primer on Nicole Shanahan...

She appears to be too all-over-the-place to me.  I think politics will break her.  I don't see her as a game-changer at all.

I sorta agree.  She is all-over-the -place.

But, could still be a game-changer.  Depends on if and who they siphon votes from, especially in swing states.

Might also show us why getting rid of electoral college is a bad idea.   Even if it'll never happen.

Large contributions make up about 55% of the $128.7 million that Biden's campaign committee has raised so far in the election cycle, OpenSecrets data showed, compared with 45% from small contributions.

For Trump, large contributions comprise 64% of the $96.1 million his campaign committee has raised, versus 36% from small contributions.

The Trump campaign is due to hold a fundraiser on April 6 hosted by billionaire hedge fund manager John Paulson in south Florida that aims to bring in $33 million, according to a person familiar with the event.

I understand that Biden is opening a dozen campaign offices in Pennsylvania and there are similar plans for other key states. There will be some famous people stumping for Biden in the coming months.  It's a busy time.

Oh boy!  Some famous people believe Biden is the best choice.  Can't wait to hear why they are choosing him.  Could be a game-changer!

Hmmm.  Thanks for the inside info.  However, I already would assume that candidates would open campaign offices in battleground states in an election year.

You can assume lots of things about campaign offices in battleground states, but the reality of what is happening is a bit more nuanced.

Trump's campaign promises an aggressive play for Michigan as part of a robust swing-state strategy.

But, at least for now, those promises appear to be mostly talk. The Trump campaign and its partners at the Republican National Committee haven't yet made significant general election investments in the state, according to Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra. The national committee, he said, hasn't transferred any money to the state party to help bolster its operations heading into the general election. There are no specific programs in place to court voters of color. And there's no general election field staff in place.

"We've got the skeleton right now," Hoekstra said. "We're going to have to put more meat on it."

It's much the same in presidential battleground states across the country, according to Republican operatives and party officials involved in campaign planning elsewhere.

Quote

Widely praised for its professionalism and effectiveness throughout the primary phase of the 2024 election, Trump's political operation has been slow to pivot toward the general election in the weeks after executing a hostile takeover of the Republican Party's national political machinery. In fact, the former president's team has rolled back plans under previous leaders to add hundreds of staff and dozens of new minority-outreach centers in key states without offering a clear alternative.

Indeed, just six months before the first early votes are cast in the general election between Trump and Biden, Trump's Republican Party has little general election infrastructure to speak of.

Officials on the ground in top swing states are not panicking, but the disparity with the Biden campaign is stark.

It looks like team Trump isn't planning to spend lots of money on fields offices and staff.

Speaking of famous people stumping for the candidates, do you think any of Trump's former cabinet members will campaign for him besides Ben Carson?

I don't remember saying anything about the electoral college bit as long as you are asking, yes, it's time is over .  It does not represent the will if the people.  It is a do nothing layer that is corruptible.  I don't really buy the argument that rural states would lose representation.  The would still have representation in Congress proportional to their population.  But I do concede that I don't have a good understanding why it was created in the first place.  I always believed it was created so that candidates would be inclined to visit and campaign in less populated areas.  It would be unfair if rural people did not have the opportunity to listen to the candidate speak.  But with modern communication we don't have to force candidates to ride in the caboose of trains.  I can't imagine that Democrats woukd ever vote for a man so devoid of character, common sense or a good working brain.  We had enough of that from 2016 to 2020.  He represents chaos and people are tired of that.  Even a member of his own family has openly warned the public to pass him by because of his mental instability.  Maybe a few former Trumpers will gravitate to his style of conspiracy thinking ...but that's a Republican trait that won't appeal to Democrats.

You could assume that but you know that they say about assuming anything.  I can't imagine any RNC money being assigned to Michigan with the beer swelling brawls we've had among the Republicans here.  We just got rid of Karamo who spent all their money ..for what isn't clear.  They would be fools to send money here.

OK.  Well, instead of assuming I will instead imagine that campaigning will be done in Michigan.

0He's already been in Michigan but our GOP in Michigan won't be spending any money.  It's broke.  The DeVos and Meijjer families won't be donating.

And today Catherine Rampell has an opinion piece that describes why Trump DID commit a civil fraud and why we must prosecute.  She articulates it much more thoroughly than I.  There is a reason that bank fraud laws were created in the first place and why he must be prosecuted.
