4th Year Last Semester Placement Advice!

Published

Hi there,

As stated in the title, I am a 4h year RN student, going into my last semester (wahoo)!

I just received my placement notice today - I am to be placed on an "acute/general/orthopaedic surgical" unit. As my placement last term was in long term care and 3rd year was all community nursing, I am quite rusty with a lot of my skills/knowledge, as I am sure you can imagine.

My question is - do any of you surgical RNs/new grads out there have some advice for me on how to prepare for this placement? I am panicking right now, as I feel I have no confidence in my ability to nurse (eek!).

Thank you in advance!

Regards,

Michelle

You will definitely learn a lot in this placement!

Brush up on general post-op care, IV fluids, NG tubes, foley catheters, dressings and wound care.

A lot of what you will be learning in this placement is how to manage a full patient load, how to prioritize, manage your time, communicate with patients, families and doctors, as well as performing nursing skills. These are mostly things that you can't study for, but they are some of the most important skills in nursing.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much, Ashley!
