Tonight I arrived about 45 minutes early simply because I couldnt wait any longer to go volunteer. As I arrived, I noticed another volunteer sitting at the station, a young girl, and her look seemed to be in puzzlement as I arrived. I didn't greet her, but I later heard she comes often, and she is going into medical school. Awfully bold of her, I must say. I did the usual and went room to room looking for full linen bags, and found several. I was somewhat surprised with amount of things that needed to be done with another volunteer. I would assume she doesn't do quite as much as I do, or they were so busy that they just keeped on filling up. I think, in this case, it was the former situation. I received a great comment tonight. A nurse came up to me and said we had another guy volunteer earlier. However, he sat down, didn't say hi to anyone, and did his homework the entire time. I took this as I'm doing a good job, but in their defense, I've set the bar somewhat high, as far as what is expected of the volunteers. She said," I didn't talk to him the entire time he was here." All I'm saying, if you are going to be there, try to help in some way as apposed to sitting there and doing your homework the entire time. Anway, tonight was a really good night, because I had more patient contact than I have before. I saw my myself, grow in a sense from my beginnings of volunteering. I walked in almost all the rooms and asked if they needed another blanket or something to drink. If they wanted something to drink, I asked the nurse if that was ok, and if so, I took coffee, soda, or even, milk and cookies. The lady that wanted the milk and cookies was very greatful. I talked another woman that was planning on goin to a cruise the following day. She was hopeful that she wouldn't miss her cruise, she was really looking forward to it. Her husband was really nice as well, and I got him some hot coffee. Also, a nurse came up to and said I wanted to show you something. Apparently, a lady came in and had some severe condition. She was prescribed vicadin, morphine, and oxycotons. This immediately made me question the person's intentions, and a term came to mind "snowing." I asked her about this, and she was furious at this irresponsiblity of the nurse who had pushed for this prescription.
This was a good night, while I once again didnt see much, I did get to help out quite abit. And I got to see alot more people tonight. This was nice.
