ojin 10th anniversary
the year 2006 marks the 10th anniversary of the online journal of issues in nursing! the celebration of this milestone begins on may 31, 2006, when we post the first topic to feature our new name, ojin: the online journal of issues in nursing. watch for additional updates about ojin 10th anniversary celebration activities.
latest topic
the latest ojin topic, infectious diseases: challenges and solutions, features a guest editor, jackie owens. five articles cover a broad range of infectious disease concerns. lashley provides a history of emerging infectious diseases and summarizes several contemporary threats including hemorrhagic fevers, monkey pox, transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, severe acute respiratory syndrome, west nile virus, and avian influenza. veenema and tõke present an overview of epidemiology and disease surveillance and review several active public health surveillance management systems. chanda and gosnell describe the impact of tuberculosis in zambia, africa, with a special focus on nursing and nurses diagnosed with tb. holstad, diiorio, and magowe review current data related to women infected with hiv. they discuss the kharma project, which features a targeted intervention designed to improve medication adherence and risk reduction behavior using a nurse led motivational group process.
finally, as a consultant for who during the 2003 sars outbreak, murphy noted a lack of minimum infection control standards from a global perspective, but also observed evidence of creativity and innovation in the response. she discusses creative examples of practice that emerged during this sars outbreak. as couig notes in the topic overview and summary, these articles demonstrate that nurses are a critical part of the response to infectious diseases.
the ojin staff hopes you will reflect on the issues presented in each of these articles and consider writing a response. we welcome submission of morificecripts and letters to the editor for additional discussion about infectious disease challenges and solutions!
two new ojin articles on previous topics
a 7th article has been added to the recent topic, "the doctor of nursing practice (dnp): need for more dialogue." h. michael dreher, gloria donnelly, and rita naremore assert that greater discussion and more data about the doctor of nursing practice degree are needed before it is widely implemented and argue it is premature to proclaim the dnp the only standard model. the authors contend that to support nursing knowledge development, the phd needs a better practice-doctorate partner than the dnp. the article discusses a doctor of nursing practice model (drnp) with a clinical dissertation that they propose will contribute to our discipline's need for more evidence-based nursing science. read this article... ......
.....letters to the editor
more letters have arrived in response to the recent ojin topic, "the doctor of nursing practice (dnp):need for more dialogue." this round of letters includes thoughts from guynn, knapp, and fuchs.......
...and a letter by terriquez-kasey in response to the topic, "one year later: the impact and aftermath of september 11."
