UTHSC-Houston Spring 2013

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi,

I am new to allnurses.com and I wanted to start a topic for the Spring 2013 applicants at UTHSC Houston. Where we can keep each other posted on the process as it nears. I have yet to take the HESI but i wonder if anyone else has taken it and what their score was. I will compile my GPA's later and post them on here.

Thanks for your comments

i started the application program already as well, and like you it is also saved. I thought the traditional didnt include summers as well and was too years. I am applying for the traditional and the Accelerated. the way i look at it the accelerated is only going to finish a few months before the Traditional since it does not start until summer. i kind of wish i was in Dallas so i could apply to Baylors because their accelerated program starts in January and is only 12 months, long. IT will be tougher but it will also be a year less that i would have to wait

hey everyone!

i got some very useful information yesterday from the ut admissions department in response to my question about how to improve my chances of getting in for this semester (i was denied last semester): "the only advice that can be given is continue to complete prerequisite courses and keep your gpa above the 3.5 range. however, i can tell you that the committee does look at the overall gpa as well and that gpa needs to be at least a 3.5 or higher as well. you want to stay as competitive as you can be."

i wrote back and asked what "overall gpa meant" and they told me that was for all the classes i had ever taken. seems like a straightforward definition of overall, but it does not say on the ut website that they factor in gpa for non-prereq coursework, let alone that it weighs just as heavily in the admissions decision process as your pre-req and science gpas. the website just says they says they "consider overall acedemic achievement". i have a previous bs but my gpa was like 3.1 and even making all as in all of the pre-reqs i have taken in my attempts to get into this program, i can't bring my total gpa up to that. so, essentially i would have been better off to have no degree than to have graduated from a major university with less than a 3.5. am i the only one that finds that unfair? anyway, i wanted to share that info with you guys since i know a lot of people are still trying to figure out why they might not have gotten in...for me, this was why. i already applied so i wasted another $30, but i won't be pursuing this program anymore. best of luck to everyone!

Thanks stacymonique I was told by them that they do not look at overall GPA. And I do think that is completely unfair especially since it is not stated. I have started my app but have not submitted it and I will still do it this semester with a lot of prayer. What other programs are u interested in. I have a bs in Accounting.

Yea, I don't know what to believe anymore...I think I am going to write back and get clarification or ask to speak to someone else about it. I specifically asked if they looked at it for both the generic and the accelerated program and they said both. For the accelerated I guess I can understand, but for the generic I don't at all since a previous degree is not a requirement. Since when is having NO previous education better than having a B in another field? I can't believe that making As in all of the nursing specific courses is negated by having made a couple Cs in classes like Invertebrate Zoology and Field Ichthyology! Anyway, I had all my eggs in that basket, but I am also going to pursue TWU (I am limited to Houston and can't relocate or drive for hours everyday). I have to go through all of their information and get some clarification on some things. I guess there is also the option of doing HCCs nursing program...it is an associates, not a BS, but I wonder how much that really matters in terms of finding a job. For most job apps a BS is preferred but not required and often it isn't even specified. I just hate to spend the same amount of time getting an ASN as it takes to get a BSN.

Stacymonique I totally agree on the having to get ur associates when u can get the bsn. But don't give up all together. The spring semester is always easier to get into than the fall. I'm sure they look at academics to see if you would be able to handle the demand of the program, but I also feel if meet and exceed all the "requirements" then the interview should be used to ask questions and allow the candidate to defend those grades" I'm more stressed now than I was before

Yes, but there is no more interview process so you never get a chance to show yourself as more than a set of numbers.

Oh wow, when did they stop that. When I called earlier this semester they said that was part of the criteria

They don't do interviews for Fall and Spring semesters as of Spring 2012...they may still do it for the accelerated program.

wow... i find this really interesting. i'm not sure that i'm buying that about a 3.5 overall gpa especially when it is clearly stated on the website that you should "have a minimum grade point average (gpa) of 2.75 or better in the required 60 hours of nursing prerequisites, and a minimum of 3.0 or better in the required science prerequisites." i mean come on, we are not applying to harvard!!

also, i have spoken to a counselor at the school a few times over the phone and i was told that they look at your gpa for previous course work, but it is not a determining factor. i was told that they really want to see your do your best on your pre-reqs for the program and your hesi exam. who's to know though... seems like people get missed information all time. it is kind of frustrating and intimidating at the same time....

Well, I cut and pasted the text right from the email I received from the admissions department, so that is just what I was told by the person that I happened to get a hold of. I wrote them back and told them that info conflicted with the info they list on their website. I remember going to an info session and they did say that although the MINIMUM GPAs are 2.75 and 3.0, competitive scores are 3.5 and above...but that was for only the pre-reqs and the sciences. The person I spoke to said that the admissions committee looks at 3 GPAs, pre-req, science, and overall...the website says they look at 2 GPAs and "consider overall academic achievement. I am sorry, but even with a 3.1, I consider a BS from A&M an academic achievement! My major was hard and I had to work at the same time! Like Kimbers said, we aren't applying to Harvard! It makes zero sense to weigh non-related classes to the pre-req classes, but last semester I had above a 3.5 in both pre-req and science, and 96.7% on the HESI and I got denied, so my 3.1 GPA in my previous degree must have been enough to outweigh those other factors. I asked to speak to someone else and my email has not been replied to yet (maybe it never will be), so maybe I will hear something more about it. I told them that if what she said was true that there is bias against previous students because they then have to meet an additional criteria (a high one at that) to get into the program that students without previous college don't have to meet.

I wish i personally knew someone in the department who would give it to me straight...no bs.
