Trouble Finding a job in houston!

U.S.A. Texas

Hi Everyone-

Here is my question. I Just moved down to the Houston area from Pennsylvania, where I had a job as a RN and did a 12 week orientation in a hostpital. Before that I worked for 2 years as a student nurse aide.

My problem is that with moving, no one seems to want to hire a new RN!!

Has anyone else had problems with this, or any solutions?

I have applied to many places and many different jobs, even ones that I didnt want that much but were more suited to my experience level. (I've done Peds nursing only, but applied for regular med/surg jobs as well)

I've had 2 interviews, one in a doctors office which I dont think went well, and another for a peds home health agency which went great! That interview was last week and I think I will get that job, but in the meantime, I wanted to write this post.

Hopefully I get this new job but in the off chance that I dont, any ideas??

Thanks!

Meghan :)

What?? Trouble finding a job in Houston?? No way.

The only explanation I can think of is since you're so new that some only want new grads during their seasonal new grad internships that generally start in January and June.

Did you try the big places like Ben Taub or Hermann?

Go to: http://www.hchdonline.com/

This is for all Harris County job openings, I'm sure there is plenty for you to do there.

Also try M.D. Anderson, another state facility with a great reputation in oncology: http://www.mdanderson.org/about_mda/careers/

Best thing to start is to get into a big hospital. And government employee benefits aren't bad either.

I read a post on another site that said the jobs were not as plentiful as before Katrina for nurses, since Texas made it possible for the displaced nurses from Louisiana to get their license. I have no idea if this is true but you are not the first to state nursing has changed in Texas in the last few weeks.

I don't know if you would be interested, but nursing homes are usually always hiring and usually will hire an RN quickly. I don't know if you like this area of nursing, but it my be something to start off with until you can get more aquainted with the area. Hope this helps.

I just find it hard to believe that LA has so many displaced nurses that they've cured the shortage in TX.

However, my hospital alone has absorbed many of them, not sure exactly how many, but I just checked my employers job website and it still looked like the usual number of openings.

Interestingly enough, there was only one new grad opening and it was in Cardiology. All other openings wanted at least 6 months experience, most wanted more than that.

If you get desparate, there's always Kindred. I know there's at least 2 facilities if not more in Houston proper, and probably others scattered in the suburbs.

Trust me, they will hire ANY warm body with a current license.

Not a great place to learn how to be a good nurse with psycho abusive families to boot, but they often pay very well. I know in Dallas they paid higher than most hospitals with great shift diffs and bonuses.

Thanks for the advice!

I was shocked too moving down to the area and not being able to find a job! It was a quick move due to my fiance's job transfer- personally I had wanted to get more experience before we moved, but i have to say I am def. suprised by this area, houston is so nice and there is so much to do/see.

I've applied to Texas Childrens, Herman Memorial, Harris County Hospital, and a few others and got no call backs from any of them.

I did see they offered internships - but i cant go without a job til they start (jan and june) but maybe I will take one in June.

Hopefully I get the one promising job doing home health Peds :) *crosses her fingers*

We shall see!
