Texas Tech RN to BSN

U.S.A. Texas

Updated:   Published

Hello, I have recently graduated from an associate nursing program, and I have already applied to Texas Tech's RN to BSN program for the Spring 2016. I haven't taken the NCLEX yet, but when I talked to tech they said that I just needed to pass it before classes started. I was just wondering if anyone has been in the program and could tell me about it. I have a 3.2 GPA and have all of the prereqs done. I also used to be a student at Tech (not that it will affect my chances at all.) I just wondered if a 3.2 GPA is good for their program, or if it's really competitive to get in. Any answers will be greatly appreciated. ?

same here!

Hey! Have you taken NCLEX yet?

Specializes in Geriatrics, Med/Surg, hospice.

I am about to graduate from TTUs RN - BSN program. I started Fall 2014 after graduating from my ADN program that May. It is pretty competitive from what I understand- I had a 3.8 GPA when applying and also went to a school that had an articulation agreement. The program is pretty "easy" for the most part. It can be time consuming though. Let me know if you have specific questions, I'd be happy to help answer.

I took the NCLEX on the 20th of July and I passed!

Specializes in Critical Care.

Not competitive. They came to my school trying to sign us up. If you have the cash, they have an opening with your name on it. Seriously. Don't sweat it.

All I had to do was send my transcripts and fill out the online app. Was assigned a student email and given the green light to register less than 24 hrs later. It totally weirded me out and I ended up choosing to not go there because of it. Now I am reconsidering my position since several nurses on my unit did the program and loved it.

I am not sure about Texas Tech but I just recently had a meeting with an advisor with UTA regarding the same concerns. My GPA is a 3.2 overall and my nursing GPA is probably somewhere around a 2.8. She stated they only look at undergrad GPA which is more like a 3.6 and the minimum is a 2.5 required. So needless to say she said I would get in no problems. I think the RN-BSN program is very non competitive.

Texas RN_14 I do have a question regarding content. I have heard it is "easy" compared to a traditional RN program. How many courses at a time did you take? What do your grades look like? How much time do you put in it? If you don't mind sharing. Just curious about the course load. I would really love to be able to make A's to help bring up my nursing GPA.

Oh cool, congrats twoy83! Did you apply to techs program?

I am starting this program in the Fall. I would like to know how the work load is as well.

I just finished the Texas Tech RN-BSN program actually a few days ago. I thought it was fairly easy, we had lots of message board posts (I can't think of a class that did not have one) but the highest I think was about 500 words. You also have to reply to posts by other students. Also, papers, but again the highest was 2,000 words or 5 pages long. Also, group projects, which I lucked out and had great group members to work with. There were a couple or three tests and a few quizzes.

The books are all available for rental through amazon except one which you have to buy from TT directly. Cost for books were small, maybe $100/semester.

I am a good at BS so I found the workload very reasonable. I did the 3 semester plan and took 3 classes the first semester, 4 classes the second semester and 3 classes in summer, my last semester. Each class was 5 weeks long, and there were 2 times I took 2 classes at once. Overall, I had multiple jobs going and worked more than full time hours and found the program very doable. I could sit down in 1 day and knock out 1-2 weeks worth of work no problem. I got all A's in the program and was not stressed. However as I said, good at BS and researching. The 2 semester plan is taking 2 classes every time, and you finish in the middle of the second semester so it is a 6 month program.

Additionally, the program cost is about $7,500 and you will have a chance to sign up for scholarships during orientation. Do it. No kidding. I got $5,000 in scholarships from TT over 3 semesters.

Another thing, sometimes you will feel like you are in an APA boot camp. There are programs you can buy which automatically put your information into APA format. Consider buying one. They are like $30 but TT does have places you can send your papers for APA and content feedback as well. My one frustration in the program was that the grading in APA was not consistent throughout the program and what was OK with one teacher was not OK with another. One piece of advice: Cite every single sentence. Yes. Every. Single. Sentence.

Good luck!

I concur with Carlene's post. I started the 6 month program in June 2014 and finished in Dec 2014 while working 48-60 hours a week and had a GPA of 3.9. I chose it over UTA because it was a shorter program. It is very doable despite it feeling like an APA boot camp! I think all programs are like that. TT is a highly reputable school. I was a very satisfied customer and would recommend it any day!!
