St. Phillips LVN Program - San Antonio, Texas

U.S.A. Texas

Updated:   Published

Has anyone taken or heard about anyone taking any nursing program at St. Phillips College (

Alamo Community College) in San Antonio, Texas? How was it?

JustMe0925 When are you applying?? Do you have your application yet?? Are you already in the San Antonio area?

Nope, not yet. We are waiting on our orders through the military, so we can move! I am just trying to get everything done and figure out exactly what I need to do because I want to be able to apply as soon as I get there!! How about you?

Yeah I understand.Well the website doesn't give you much info but I would like to apply and be in next Fall. I live maybe about 2 hours away but I would probaly just move to make it a little easier.

I had them send me some information on the LVN program to my email. It covers most everything. If you give me your email, I can forward it to you, if you would like. Just let me know!

Yeah, the website is okay. It still leaves a lot of unanswered questions. I would email them and say you live far so maybe they could send you a copy of the application packet they give to all those who apply. Another thing I wanted to mention but forgot is you need a lot of vaccinations! They have a list of all you need. You also need current CPR for Healthcare Providers. Thank you for the congratulations on my first semester! I would send in all your transcripts now just to make sure they have them. I remember one of mine took a very long time to get there and that was all I was waiting on. You also have to take an accuplacer test, it's just a basic skills test in like reading, writing, and math, you can find practice tests and study guides online.

And yes taking classes before hand I would def. recommend! You can take Anatomy & Physiology 1 and 2, nutrition, psychology growth and development. Medical terminology is not required but I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. During the first semester you have abbrev. and med. term. quizzes every week.

I'll keep thinking and posting what else you may need or may need to know.

Here is the LVN program description for St. Philips:

There is additional pages at the bottom in blue you can click on to read more about it. It has the admission criteria, info. about the accuplacer, etc.

I hope this helps!

Well thanks alot, honestly your information really helped!:D I was really nervous about this but hopefully everything will work out. And I already took the THEA so I'm going to ask will that work but other than that I was just wondering do the CPR, shot records and all are mailed with the application or when you figure out whether or not you are accepted??

You have to turn everything in together. But one set of your transcripts go to the school and the other set gets attached to your application. I had to wait several weeks before I knew if I was in or not, and I turned my application in the last day. haha.

Lol okay I think I understand now..I'm somewhat excited now!

hahaha good!

Specializes in OB/Gyn, L&D, NICU.

i am in the pre-nursing program at st. phillip's. i have a bachelor's degree from utsa and have attended 5 universities, and i can honestly say st. phillip's is the best school i have been to so far. the teachers really care and seem to know what they are doing, the campus is clean, exquisite library, students are friendly and busy with getting an education rather than just getting by, and the students at sac scared me when i toured there! i checked into galen, but $18,000 for an lvn!! st. phillip's is about $6,000, and their programs are the same length - 1 yr.

you don't have to do the prerequisites, but i would recommend doing them ahead of time so you don't have to take 18 hours your first semester. get human growth, a&p i & ii, and nutrition out of the way before you start.

i think the order may have changed somewhat but it's still pretty much the same:

here is the complete courseload:

vocational nursing (2547)

first semester

second semester

third semester

total credit hours required: 47

you can then get your rn completely online with excelsior in 7 courses, 2 online clinicals, and 1 weekend clinical.

Hello!

Yes! I would also recommend that you take some classes before you start the LVN Program at St. Philips College. I would take Human Anatomy I, Human Anatomy II, Psychology Growth & Development, and Nutrition. I'm in my second semester of the LVN Program, and I had to take the full 18 hours the first semester, and it was a lot! Another reason, besides course load, to take these classes before is that they are required for the LVN to RN Program, and at least you have them out of the way now! :)

I've heard a few people talk about Excelsior, what exactly is that?
