LVN before ADN

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Everyone has definitely told me that it's best to pursue the ADN initially. I'd rather do that. But I have a backup plan if I cannot get the scholarships and grants.

LVN starts June 2019 through May 2020. I've completed all prerequisites except the HESI exam. Costs before any awards or grants is $1,300/semester for three semesters (booksoincl.).

A subsequent transition program is also June-May at an approximate cost of $900/semester (with books).

ADN starts August 2019 through December 2020. Each of the 4 semesters averages $1,800/semester. The deal here is there is prerequisite work that needs to be done. A&P 1 and 2 plus Micro. Those I'd prefer done before nursing school. Cost would be about $1,400. I've got time to finish the A&P 1, register for A&P 2 and Micro before schooling starts.

If I have to pay for school myself I have to do the LVN first. I hope there's a market for them here in Houston. My wife works but we are just making it now and we maybe could tough it out over 12 months but not 19.

I don't know what either LVN or ADN definitively make, but if an LVN can get close to the $55k I make now that'd be great.

Is there any options I missed? I can't stay at my current job because of irregular, non-accomodating hours.

Edit: I'm 43, we have 5 year old twin boys.

Please help out with some comments or suggestions

I've never been an LVN in Texas, but what do you mean by "irregular, non-accomodating hours"? That sounds a lot like nursing ...especially as a new graduate.

I meant to say I can't go to school due to those hours. My apologies.

Considering your age, family situation and your income needs becoming an LVN first may be in your best interest. Those prices are very low! What school after you planning to attend?
